Coughlans or Coghlans to Australia
« on: Sunday 03 October 04 14:47 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to track down info and any descendants of two Coughlan brothers, my great-great uncles, who emigrated from County Limerick (Pallaskenry I believe) to Australia in approx the 1890's or early 1900's. I think one was christened Cornelius or Con for short and the other Mathew.

I'll be most grateful for any assistance. I'm visiting Oz in Dec/Jan

Many thanks

Hello Journeyman

Do you have any idea as to what part of Australia they came to.
I had a quick look on the site below there are quite a few Coughlans, a Cornelius and a Matthew are there  however the dates are too early. This site is just for Victoria though.

I had a search through my Vic indexes and I only came up with a entry for a-

Marriage of Cornelius Jos Coughlan to Emily Moodie in Ballarat in 1897 Reg.no 3922

Hoping this can help

Many thanks Troods.
The Ballarat one sounds about right. Would need to track down family.

Can anyone else reading this help?

Thanks and best regards

Hi journeyman

If you are willing to spend a relatively small amount of cash, you can search online for the death certificate of Cornelius and/or his wife. For an extra amount you can download (I think about $20AU)  an image of the certificate. Australian certificates usually (IF the informant knew the detail) will tell you the number and/or ages of living children, names of parents and time spent in Australia. Family history centres may have free access to CD indexes, but there is no free access to the full certificates. The downloads are the cheapest access for Victorian data. To find any living descendants you may have to track deaths of the children of Cornelius. The link is 3 lines long. If you go here
http://www.dvc.vic.gov.au/bdm.htm and then track through the BDM registry, you will find details & access to the records.

The other options are via cemetery records and/or newspapers, which are not so easy to find online.

If you check the oz white pages http://www.whitepages.com.au
there are about 8 Coughlans listed in the Ballarat area. Whether they are any relation? Could be worth a snail mail.
There is also a Ballarat genealogical Society http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/ with a multitude of links and historical information. They have an interesting collection of indexes for sale - perhaps they may do lookups.

Hi, one of the Coughlans currently living in the Ballarat area is my brother. We are not directly descended from the ones who emigrated, but are the Grandchlidren of Thomas Coughlan.   regards...
Coughlan (from Limerick), Crowe (from Carlow).
