Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply.

My ancestor Letitia Anne Waite was born at either Clanville or Penton Grafton in 1843 to parents George and Mary. She also had a brother Richard born c1832. Any further information on this family would be much appreciated.

Regards

David

Hi David,

Well, we must be fairly closely related, Letitia was my great-great grandmother.

I reckon she was baptised on 26th Aug. 1838 ( not 1843), married to Henry Dore on 23 Aug 1866 and died on 30 Sep 1930. Her first child was my great grandfather Frederick Waite for whom there were no birth/ baptismal records. He was aged 2 in the 1861 census so was born about 1858/9. At that time she was about  19 and amazingly the father Henry Dore was only about 13 being born on 9 Jul 1845. After her marriage to Henry she went on to have another son Henry born 22 Apl 1867.
I have records of her having 12 siblings including Richard who you mention, and also a George who died aged 11 having fallen down the well of the Rev. Thomas Lockton in Clanville.
It would appear Letitia never looked after her illegitimate son. According to the censuses he was living with his grandparents George & Mary (nee Green) in 1961 and then with his uncle Richard and wife Martha in the next two censuses.

George Waite was baptised on 27 Dec 1789 and married Mary Green (bap. 22 Jan 1792) on 18 Nov 1811 in Weyhill. George had 11 siblings. His father was James Waight born in Hampshire c. 1755. and died 29 Aug 1844 in Penton Mewsey. The first 3 siblings were born to Sarah who died in Sept 1785. The remainder to his second wife also Sarah (nee Wallis) She was bap. 21 Jul 1769 in Owslebury. Married James on 28 Jul 1789 in Penton Mewsey and was buried 21 Feb 1855. Her parents were William and Sarah Wallis.

I can't get back further than that but have further dates etc for siblings.

Don't hesitate to contact me for more info. It might be easier to email further details ??

If you have any info I would of course be most interested.

All best wishes

Tony

Thanks Tony,

That's an amazing and unexpected amount of new information that's going to take a while to digest!

Letitia was my 3xgreat-grandmother and I'm descended from the Henry Dore born in 1867.

I'll send you a personal message with my e-mail address.

Regards

David

Hi Tony,

I make us 3rd cousins, once removed!

Thanks again for your information, which is most helpful. I would certainly be interested to have further details on siblings etc.

From looking at censuses, I can see that I definitely had the year of birth for Letitia wrong, so thanks for the correct information.

I'm fascinated to discover that Henry Dore fathered a child at 13. Did you manage to find definite proof of this, given there were no birth/baptismal records?

Do you have any idea how Henry and Letitia met? Could it have been through being in Service? I believe Letitia Anne was probably the Anne Waite shown as a housemaid at Tidworth in 1861 (age 24, born Clanville), which would explain why Frederick was living with his grandparents.

In the 1960's/70's my grandfather managed to trace the Dore family back to John Dore born 1570 in Freshwater, Isle of Wight. The line from my grandfather went back as follows:

Harry Percival Dore born 1915 Newport IOW
Archibald Henry Dore born 1899 Cowes IOW
Henry Dore born 1867 Freshwater IOW
Henry Dore born 1845 Freshwater IOW
William Dore born 1810 Freshwater IOW
James Dore born 1764 Freshwater IOW
John Dore born 1735 Freshwater IOW
David Dore born 1702 Freshwater IOW
David Dore born 1670 Freshwater IOW
Nicholas Dore born 1615 Freshwater IOW
John Dore 1570 Freshwater IOW

Best wishes and Happy Christmas.

David
