Setchfield
« on: Wednesday 08 March 06 13:22 GMT (UK) »
I have an ancestor living in Islington in 1851 who is shown as being born in Setchfield, Gloucestershire. However, I can find no record of any such place. Can anyone tell me where it might be?

I am beginning to think it must have been mispronounced or misspelt and could be somewhere like Letchlade.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

Thanks

David

Hi

Check some other censuses to see if it confirms your theory.

Thanks for suggestion Genechaser, but unfortunately, his wife appears as a widow in the 1861 census and she didn't come from the same place.

Thanks Kali, that sounds promising.

I've had a quick search on Google but it only brings up Sedgefield, County Durham and Tony Blair! I'll keep investigating though.

There are all sorts of places that don't appear in things like parish lists and Gazeteers for instance i've just found a Shakesfield nr Dymock which didn't show up on Genuki parish lists. there may be others.

Any chance of a link to the census page so that we can try to decipher the writing?

Thanks for the suggestion.

I found it on Ancestry.co.uk, which obviously will only be available to subscribers. I'll have to see if I can put it on a free-to-access web page somehow.

Hi,

His name was William Wentworth, shown in 1851 as aged 49, Horse Keeper, living with wife Jane and daughter Elizabeth in the Parish of Islington, Borough of Finsbury.

Thanks.
