Hi David

Certainly looks like Setchfield - never heard of it!

Unfortunately, they seem to be in Middlesex in 1841 (birth of their daughter aged 11 in 1851) and he is dead by 1861 (Jane is a widow).

Had you any previous association for this family with Gloucestershire, to give an idea of the area?  Phonetically the nearest would be Sedgefield, but of course that isn't in Gloucestershire.

Not very helpful, but will keep thinking for you!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

You have probably already tried this, but there are 10 other WENTWORTHs born Gloucestershire in 1851 - 3 from Lechlade, one from Bristol and the rest from Cirencester.

One of the Ciren ones is an Elizabeth b 1788 - possibly your Elizabeth's grandmother??  Of the others one is a William born Cirencester in 1799 - possibly your man's dad?  Might be interesting to see a census for 1841 to see if this couple are together, although it won't prove anything.  Have you tried the IGI?

;)

Hi Arranroots

Thanks for your help on this.

Unfortunately, there is no previous association with Gloucestershire for this family.

I had tried searching for other Wentworths born in Gloucestershire in the 1851 census and came up with the same results as you. It did get me thinking that Lechlade to Setchfield is perhaps not too far a leap if this information were given in a broad Glos accent to an enumerator with no knowledge of the area.

I searched the IGI for William Wentworth and found one born in 1809 in Lechlade, Glos but I think this one appears in the 1851 census as living in Devizes.

I did also consider that Setchfield might actually be Litchfield.  Searching for any other people born in Setchfield, Gloucestershire did not come up with any results, but searches for people born in Litchfield, Gloucestershire in various censuses turned up the following:

Name:    Charles Godding
Birth:    abt 1820 - Litchfield, Gloucestershire, England
Residence:    1891 - London, St Pancras, London, England

Name: John Blewett
Birth: abt 1877 - Litchfield, Gloucestershire, England
Residence: 1881 - Westbury on Severn, Gloucestershire, England

Name:    Jane Baines
Birth:    abt 1808 - Litchfield, Gloucestershire, England
Residence:    1871 - Brighton, Sussex, England

Name:    Henry Mayo
Birth:    abt 1854 - Litchfield, Gloucestershire, England
Residence:    1871 - Portland, Dorset, England
Name: Elizabeth Hebborn
Birth: abt 1787 - Litchfield, Gloucestershire, England
Residence: 1861 - Oxford St Ebbe, Oxfordshire, England

Name:    William Chanden
Birth:    abt 1798 - Litchfield, Gloucestershire, England
Residence:    1851 - Southwark St George, Surrey, England

Name:    Sarah Smith
Birth:    abt 1783 - Litchfield, Gloucestershire, England
Residence:    1851 - Holcot, Northamptonshire, England

As far as I am aware, there is no Litchfield in Gloucestershire either (only Hampshire), so where could they be from? I have tried to find records for these same people on the IGI, but haven’t found them. I have also tried looking for them in other censuses to see if that gives any more information, but it hasn’t helped as yet.

I’ll keep plugging away though!

Regards

David

I think I may have found some evidence to support my theory about Litchfield/Setchfield being Lechlade.

Jane Baines of Lambeth, Surrey, born 1808, is shown in the 1871 census as coming from Litchfield, Gloucestershire. However, in 1861 it is shown as Litchdale and in 1851 it is clearly Lechlade.

Hi
I found this Lechlade (Letchlade at some time in the past) Web site.
http://ox18.net/lechladehistoygroup.htm

Maybe some one on there can tell you if there is a history of Letchfield being used.
Malmesbury- Bishop.
Gloucestershire-Bishop,Hicks,Higgs,Hill,Hooper,Hopkins,Pitcher,Robertson,Stinton,Terret,Woodruff.
Worcestershire-Stinton.
Devon- Borrough or Burrow.

Hi

That's a good idea. I'll give it a try.

Thanks.

Hi Logdore

I came across this while trying to look up my own family tree, and noticed that you'd got the exact same ancestors that i was looking up. By my estimations Emily Wentworth is my Great Great Grandmother, and Jane and her father William are the same too. Unfortunately I got pretty stuck around there which was pretty disappointing seeing as I've traced the other name in my double barreled name back to 1620. I might have found Williams parents, possibly William Wentworth and Frances Marie Paice. I was just wondering if you got any further in your attempts to find them.

Thanks,

Jack

Hi Jwweedon,

I am descended from Thomas Weedon and Elizabeth Mary Wentworth, so there is a strong connection I think.

I haven't looked at this for a while, but this is a message I sent my dad in 2008, which explains where I got to. When I get a chance, I'll try to give you a fuller reply.

Regards

David

"I obtained a copy of the attached marriage licence today at the Gloucester Records office. I believe it is the marriage of the grandparents of Elizabeth Mary Wentworth. Elizabeth's parents were William Wentworth and Jane Evans who married at St Clement Danes Westminster on 07/05/1827.

The 1851 census shows William to come from Setchfield/Letchfield, Gloucestershire and to be aged 49. There is no such place as this, but from looking at other census records (such as Jane Baines of Lambeth, Surrey shown in 1871 as coming from Litchfield, Glos, in 1861 from Litchdale and
1851 from Lechlade), it is probable that he was born in Lechlade. Of the 10 other Wentworths shown in 1851 as being born in Gloucestershire, one was from Bristol, 3 were from Lechlade and the rest were from Cirencester (near Lechlade).

The IGI shows a William Wentworth born 6 Nov 1810 and baptised at Lechlade
23 Jul 1809. Clearly not right, but I have checked the original parish register and it shows that he was actually born on 6th Nov 1801. This person would have been aged 49 at the time of the 1851 census and would have turned
50 on 6th Nov 1851. I think this must be our William.

William's parents were Stephen Wentworth and Mary. Stephen married Mary Mills at Fairford, Glos on 8th Dec 1796 (also recorded in the Lechlade
registers) and the licence is for this marriage. It shows Stephen to be a Butcher (I think William was a Greengrocer in 1841). Stephen's father is shown to be Edward Wentworth, a farmer."

Wow thanks, thats really helpful, its interesting because my last name is the combination of your ancestors Wentworth-Weedon. I used your information and added it to my tree and managed to push the generations back a few times to about 1590 with a guy called John Wentworth Wynckworth, but from there the data runs dry. To be fair thats quite far back, and it gets sketchier and sketchier but i'm happy to pencil the earlier ancestors in and settle with them. Thanks again for all the really helpful  information, just out of interest, which of Thomas Weedon and Elizabeth Mary Wentworth's children are you descended from. I come from Henry Porteous.

Regards,

Jack
