Hi Chris,
I am looking for a George Marshall born around 1790.  He married a Mary ???? in Taxal around 1822.  The children I have found are James 1822, Jonathon 1824.  In the 1841 census for New Mills he is described as widower, 50, not born in Derby with children James, Jacob, Isaac, Jonathon, not born in Derby and William, Mary & Elizabeth born in Derby.
Can you help please.

There is a marriage of Geo MARSHALL, Taxal, Collier to Mary HILL, sp. Kett 28 Jul 1823 at Prestbury

Can anyone tell me what the Bertram Merrell's marriage index and the Pallot Marriage Index is forgive my ignorance but haven't investigated many marriages around 1780's.

Best wishes
Dorey

Hi Dorey,

Pallot's is an index covering approximately 1.5 million marriages mainly in the London and Middlesex area 1780 - 1837.  It contains limited coverage of other parishes around the country.

The Bertram Merrell index was compiled by Bertram Merrell and contains marriages from various parishes at various dates, but does not have complete coverage - the coverage is for Cheshire only.  The CD available from the Cheshire family history society also contains the Hartley Jones Marriage Index for the Wirral Peninsula, and the Mid-Cheshire Marriage Index.

There is also a North & East Cheshire Marriage Index compiled by volunteers and mainly covering the dates 1754 - 1837.  The coverage between these dates is complete for some parishes.  This is also available to purchase from the Cheshire Family History Society.

Other counties may also have indexes that cover some parishes, you will often find reference to them in the county resources boards here in rootschat.

Hope this helps,

Jean

Hi Allan, have you seen the Cheshire Parish Register project site - http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/?  The Backford parish register is one of the transcriptions available, there are the following baptisms:

Elizabeth dau of Ralph & Mary Oakes 12 Mar 1776
Peter son of Ralph & Mary Oakes 17 Oct 1779
Elizabeth dau of William & Margaret Oakes 15 Oct 1780
Daniel son of Ralph & Mary Oakes 25 Jan 1782
etc - 32 baptisms in all between 1776 and 1830.

Also burial of Ralph Oakes of Backford, Farmer, 13 Feb 1800 - there are 15 OAKES burials at Backford between 1790 and 1854.

Hope this is of some help,

Jean

Hi Jean

Thank you for that information.  Would these also be available at the Chester Records Office?

Also, when I visit other counties I presume that the apart from the Parish Registers there are different indexes for marriage in different parishes and basically the Records offices of that county should have them, is this correct?

Best wishes
Dorey

Hi Dorey,

I'm not sure, you would have to check with CRO to make sure - they work closely with Cheshire FHS so I would imagine so.

Most record offices will have this type of index if there is one, but many parishes aren't indexed and then you have to search through the records.  It's worth checking the FHS sites or www.genfair.com to see what is available.

Hi Heather,

My first instinct would be the place, Kettleshulme, but I'm not sure.
