Hello Peter,

Very much appreciate the offer. Only info I have is from '71 census of Barton upon Irwell, Salford which shows William 66, a gardener, born Tabley Cheshire and wife Jane 73 born Chesterfield Derbyshire.  He probably never returned to Cheshire.

But thank you for your help,

Gordon.

Hi Gordon
I have searched the 1841 and 1851 census's of Cheshire without finding William. It seems he must have left Cheshire earlier.

sorry

Once again many thanks, Peter.  Looks like I'll have to direct my searches towards the Salford area now.

Kind regards,

Gordon

Hi Chris, I am new to this forum so I hope that I am using the correct format to ask a question.  I am researching lots of branches of my family tree but at present am concentrating on the "Daniel" branch. I have got back to the early 1800's but have come unstuck with a lack of details on certain documents.  Specifically I am trying to find out who were the parents of Isaiah Daniel of Norbury Hazel Grove, Stockport and where did they come from.  From library records I know he married Ann Williamson at St Mary's church, Cheadle on 6th November 1821.  But that is all it tells me.  I do not know where to look for any other details about him.  I know they were methodists of Welsh extraction.  The family were coalminers.  Can you offer any advise?  Thanks Evelyn
Researching these family surnames: Daniel (cheshire & Wales), Retford (Lancashire & Canada), Tomlinson (Lancashire), Brewin (Lancashire & Cheshire), Jones (Shropshire)

Hi Evelyn
Welcome to rootschat, from what I can see you have managed to do very well up now, before I go over ground that you may have allready reseached can you tell me if you know that he was born Hazel Grove or elswhere , from early census records perhaps. What records have you searched at the Cheshire records office, if he was baptised at the
Hazel Grove (Bullock Smithy), Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan). Founded 1788. The registers 1794-1837 are at the CRO.
Sorry I have no info I can give you at the moment. please get back to us.

Hi Chris,

thanks for the kind offer.

I'm looking for an elusive ancestor named Arthur GIBBON. Arthur was born (according to his marriage cert and the 1891/1901 censuses) in about 1854.

The 1901 census says he was born in Macclesfield and on one of his marriage certs he gives his father's name as Matthew GIBBON.

There is no record of Arthur's birth in the national BMD indexes (and to complicate matters, the 1891 census says he was born in Stoke, Staffordshire!)

Anything you could dig up from the Cheshire Parish Records would be fantastic and very much appreciated.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy

I will see what I can find for you, although parish records index will not show any more than the national registration index. And with out knowing the parish he was born in its quite difficult
Can you give all the details from the 1891 census including wife and children. Do you have him on the 1881
Can you give me a couple more facts from marriage cert

where and when and to who
what did his father do for a living

regards

Peter,

Thanks for your kind offer.

There is no record of Arthur Gibbon on the 1881 Census, and with not appearing in the national birth indexes either, he was very elusive for a while.

By the time of the 1891 Census he was living at 97 Olivia St, Bootle, Lancashire. The entry (as given to me) is:

Arthur Gibbon age 37 Tram car driver b. Staffordshire looks like Stoke
Elizabeth wife age 50 b. Salop Shrewsbury
Violet Parry, niece age 10 b Salop Westbury?
Sarah Parry. niece age 28? cook domestic, b. Salop Shrewsbury
William Jackson boarder age 43 ? driver b. Cumberland (can't make out the town.)

In 1901 Arthur and Elizabeth were resident at 45 Linacre Road, Bootle and had a son Arthur William Edward, who was born in 1892. (on this census record Arthur is listed as being 47 and born in Macclesfield, Cheshire and Elizabeth listed as being 36 and born in Shropshire).

The marriage was between Arthur Gibbon and Elizabeth Parry (I believe this to be the Elizabeth who appears on the census records – Elizabeth Gibbon nee Parry is listed as Arthur William’s mother on his birth cert). It took place in 1907, at West Derby Register Office (I’m afraid I don’t have access to all of my records at the moment, so can’t be more precise).

On the marriage cert, Arthur said that his father was a silk throwster.

Thanks again for anything you can find.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy
I think you need a medium to find Arthur prior to 1891!
I have searched all the census's in Macclesfield and there is no Arthur. There is in the 1851 Macclesfield a

Matthew Gibbon unwed farmer 39 HO 107 2159 F 60  ??

Of course its possible that his mother was unwed at the time of birth and Arthur was registered under another name, and only took the Gibbon name at some later date. I dont have acsess to Staffordshire records otherwise I would search the Stoke census.
The age of 50 for Elizabeth in 1891 does not ring true, I would be more inclined to lean towards the 26 and spend some time searching for her in the 1881. Can her age be confirmed approx from the marriage certificate ?
Arthur is definately not on any Cheshire census.

sorry I can't be any more help.
