Thanks for the Reply to my question about Thomas Millward.
I shall have a look into the info you gave me about his father, William.
What does marriage by licence mean, not married in Church with Banns ect., but in a reg Office?
Thanks Mrs G

Hi Mrs G,

There is an explanation of marriage by licence here:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,255467.0.html

If you are ever looking for a meaning, there is a really useful lexicon of topics here:

Hello, I'm trying to find out more information about marriages in the Penny family in the Runcorn / Northwich / Great Budworth area, please:

William Penny to Ann Cowley, roughly between 1810 - 1820.

His parents, James Penny to Martha Unknown, roughly between 1770 - 1790.

Ann's parents, James Cowley and Mary Unknown, roughly between 1770 - 1790.

Thank you!

Janet

Hello Janet,

Well, this is a bit strange, I couldn't see anything at first but then:

Ann COWLEY m Wm KELSOPENNY 11 Sep 1805 at Great Budworth
and also this:
John Kelsal PENNY, bachelor m Mary ASTLES, widow 19 Apr 1825 at Great Budworth
and
Jas Kelsall PENNY, 21 m Mary PICKSTOCK 22 Oct 1800 at Witton

I wonder if the register had joined middle name and surname by mistake?

Jean

Hello Jean, I was able to find more info about the 1826 wedding of William Millward and Elizabeth Hunt
on the Familysearch Pilot site where it had batch, file, film numbers.etc. Unfortunately there was no icon to take me to the original details. I joined the Find My Past site hoping to find out more but they did not have any record of William. Where can I look next? As I have all the details surely the original is somewhere to be seen.
Thank you for the listings of abbreviations, they were very useful.
Among the familySearch details of William was England VR. Does VR means vital records? In this case what are Vital records?
Thanks again,  Mrs G

Thank you so much, Jean.

This must be the right family as I already had a Thomas Halsall or Kelsall Penny born 1823 - the former middle name from the census, the latter from the Cheshire BMD.  He was the son of William and Ann; John and James look to be William's brothers.

I wonder if Kelsall was their mother Martha's maiden name.  I'll also take a look on IGI under Kelsopenny just in case.

Many thanks again.

Janet

Hi Jean,
Thank you so much for taking the time to search and heading me in the right direction!
You can probably tell that I am new at this!  This  must be the William Constantine  I have been looking for.  Never thought of him passing on before Mary was born. Now I can get a death certificate.

Hi Mrs G,

I think that the resource that you found on the family search pilot site is the BVRI (British Vital Records Index) - the images aren't available for that source.  As you have a date for the marriage you could order a copy of the parish register entry - this link will take you to the site:

http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/Recordoffice/shop/
- chose "Order Photocopies Now"
