Hi Sandra
There are more than you think I have found details of approx 150 male Hignet(t)(it)(itt) marriages in Cheshire the majority of which are in the areas you mention.
Have you any specific names you are looking for ?

Wow, how's that for service!

The reason all this family history started is because i own a family bible and the first entry in it is by Samuel Hignett, born January 19, 1746/47 in Thornton le Moors.  He died in January 1817.

I live in Somerset, so I am trying to use the internet as much as I can, and came across this forum only this afternoon.

I have no records at all any earlier than 1746/47, but if you can find anything, with the spelling Hignett, and for now ignore the others, does that narrow your search down, to at least a manageable number?

For this reason I am unable to give you any Christian names, but a bit more information about "my Samuel".

He married Hannah Manifold on 5 October 1772 by licence.  Thomas Hewson was the vicar and the witnesses were Joseph Hignett and Peter Manifold.  We might assume (dangerous, I know!) that Joseph might have been his brother?

So for a start, maybe try Samuel, Joseph or William!

Thanks again,

Sandra

Hi
l wondered if you could find any information on Cowdell of Stockport.
l know my g/g/g/grandfather Enoch was born 1797 to Joseph and Sarah Cowdell. l would like to find out where Joseph came from. His surname seems to have been changed from Cowgill to Coldhill to Cowdell some where along the way. Possibly originating as Cowgill from Thornton In Craven. West Yorkshire.
Enoch moved to Thornhill. West Yokshire but l don't know if he married Ann Dixon before he left Stockport.
Any information would be really helpfull.
Thanks in advance.
Regards Pam

Hi Pam
There doesn't seem to be a marriage for an Ann Dixon and a Enoch in the indexes that I have, which are fairly complete for that area.
When did he move to Yorkshire was he there at the 1841 census ? Did Ann originate from Stockport ?
I looked for a marriage between Joseph and Sarah but did not find that either.

Not a lot of help, sorry

Hi Peter
Thanks for trying.
l'm not sure but l think they were probably in Yorkshire by then, either Thornhill or Thornton In Craven.
l know Enoch was born or christened July 1797 in Stockport but that's all.
Thanks for trying.

Thanks for that Clowes information - its great.
I hadn't come across the cheshirebmd site before, do you know if there are similar sites for other counties - it looks like a better way than using 1837online?
Cheers,
   Dave Campbell

Hi Dave

There are some other counties involved in the same type of index as Cheshire, maybe they are not so advanced as Cheshire but they are getting there.
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/

Also before trying the 1837 online you should give the free BMD site a look, again it is not complete.
