I wonder if anyone knows about divorce records - if such a thing existed back then?
Cilla

Divorce was legally impossible in England and Wales after the Reformation until 1857 except through a private Act of Parliament. While not so expensive as some commentators claim, it was nevertheless a complicated procedure. Such an act had to be introduced, normally following a judicial separation, through the House of Lords. The cost was 120GBP if uncontested but up to 800GBP if contested, and took about a year. Until 1857 only the ecclesiastical courts had jurisdiction to assist spouses who could not use the parliamentary procedure. The church courts could annul a marriage, by a decree of nullity, declaring that the marriage had never been valid.

Thanks Jean and Stan for your replies.  Good information to know.
Obviously divorce was not an option for these two given their occupational status (post boy and dressmaker) - if indeed they were ever married.  Will take my puzzle over to the main boards!
Thanks again

Hi Chris,
I am researching my g/g/g/g/grandparents William Woods born about 1743, and his wife Sarah (surname unknown) born about 1780.  Both were buried in May 1820, St. Oswalds Church, Malpas and their children William Woods christened same church 1781, Thomas Woods christened 1783, Randle Woods christened 1786, Samuel Woods christened 1788, another Samuel Christened 1789, Ralph Woods born about 1793, all at St. Oswalds, can you please assist with marriage of William and Sarah Woods, I assume, but am not sure they would have married at St. Oswalds Church, Malpas.

Regards,
Big Kev

Hi Big Kev and welcome to Rootschat.

I have had a look and cannot see an obvious marriage, there is one for Wm WOOD and Sarah MITCHELL at Biddulph, Staffs 23 Sep 1771 (he is from Astbury) but it seems too early to fit.  Malpas isn't very well covered although events are being added to www.freereg.org.uk but only covers 1820 - 1829 at the moment.

Hi Chris,

I would be grateful if you would look up on Phillimores Cheshire Parish Records. My WILSON family
lived in Guilden Sutton and Huxley, Cheshire. I am at a brick wall and I would appreciate any WILSON marriages pre 1837.

Thank you

Peter

Hi Peter,

Welcome to Rootschat!

I'm sorry but a blanket search on a common surname like Wilson is too difficult.

Can you post details of your brickwall on the main Cheshire board giving all the detail that you have including dates, census references etc and we will give you all the help we can.

Will look out for you post and see if I can help,

Jean

Dear Chris,

I have just seen this offer to look up Cheshire marriages BUT before I waste your time - the reason I want it looked up is in case it gives the bridegrooms father's name  I have never seen Phillimores so have no idea what it gives.   I am unable to find this marriage on the online parish records for cheshire.   The witnesses names would be useful.

The couple are:  George Foster/Forster
                                b 1799        Wrenbury and
                             Ann Cadman
                                 b 1803 Acton

I suspect but don't know, that they married in Wrenbury Parish Church.   I believe George Foster/Forster was living in Audlem at one time, also Woolfall.

The marriage took place on 1.4.1823 (from IGI sources - submitted).

If you found the record where would I be able to request a certificate from since it is pre-1837.

Thank you for any help you can give me.
