Hi,

I have been researching my ALDCROFT family from Cheshire for some time now. I have now got back before civil registration and need to look at parish records and have thought about getting the Cheshire Parish Records CD but am not sure how useful it would be to me.

Could you please try and look up my ggg grandfather John Aldcroft who I believe was born around 1796 and married Mary I presume before civil records began? I believe he would come under the parish of St Mary's, Bowden as most of the family records I have refer to New Chester, Sale.

Is there only one "Cheshire Parish Records" CD and who publlished it.

Thank you for your help.

Cheshirecat :)

Hi Cheshirecat
There are about 10 marriages at Bowden for the Aldcroft family but no John.
Can you paste in the details from the earliest census you have for John and family I may be able to trace them back.
The only near complete Cheshire parish records that have been published is the Bertram Merral marriage index. Which is the one I use. There are several indexes of individual townships dotted about the net and also the Philmores Cheshire marriage index which is a partial index coverering mainly east Cheshire.
If there is any info you need at any time please post on this site there are lots of people willing to help.

Hi Peter,

I do have the Bertram Merrell Marriage Index myself and I couldn't find John either! That is why I wanted to know if there was any more info on the parish records.  Below is the information I have from the 1841 census

John            10

Hi
Having looked at the marriages for your Aldcrofts it seems odd that John and Mary are not at Bowden or any other church in the area. There can only be two reasons
1 ) they have been missed of the bishops transcipts, not unusual
2 ) they didn't marry, or married out of Cheshire which does not make sense, sorry thats 3.
It looks like a visit to the Cheshire RO at Chester is the next step.

sorry not much help am I.

Hi Peter,

Well thanks for trying anyway!   Maybe the BM index is not that complete.  Unfortunately Chester is quite a long way away for me.

Do you know what happened to the Cheshire parish record transcription project that I think was being organised by somebody at Manchester Uni?

Regards,

Gould ....possibly All Saints Church

Searching for Cheshire family history ....family lived in both Stockport and Great Longstone

1- In particular, am trying to find birthplace and antecedents of George Gould born about 1771...living in Stockport in 1830's-40's ...possibly 1820's also..died there in 1849 though buried in Great Longstone 12/23/1849...age listed as 78.   Need to find if listed in 1841 Stockport census or parish register ...two grandsons christened in Stockport ...(see below -William christened Dec 1 1833 Stockport by Rev C Prescott  ...George Jr and Mary's residence Newbridge Lane)

George Gould (Senior) married Martha Hulley (born@1781 Great Longstone) in 1801 Bakewell ....lived for about 20 years in Great Longstone ...not found in 1841 GL census so may be in Stockport 1841 census since 1849 death record lists Stockport as abode ...widow apparently then moved to Great Longstone to live with son George Jr.  She died there in 1851 at 69.

2-George Gould Jr born 1808 in Great Longstone ...married Mary Waterhouse 1833 Cathedral Manchester.  Son William baptized Dec 1, 1833
Parish Church Stockport (would this be All Saints?) ...by Rev C. K. Prescott ...lived on Newbridge Lane...occupation cordwainer/shoemaker

Son John also born in Stockport ...apparently George Jr and Mary moved back to Great Longstone probably late 1830's ...were in 1841 census Great Longstone, living on Main St...George listed as shoemaker then as  cordwainer in 1851 census.  Mary died 1860 age 48; George Jr died 1882 ...age 74

Known Children of George Sr and Martha. Hulley Gould.. all born in Great Longstone: Mary (died as infant); John; Isaac (believe died in childhood); George; James; Martha; William; Thomas; Anne

Known Children of George Jr & Mary Waterhouse Gould...born in Stockport: William T. (emigrated to US); John;   following born in Great Longstone:Elizabeth; Joseph; Thomas; Anna or Hannah; Harriett (who was living with George Jr at time of his death ... Harriett had married J.  Nadin)

Possibly some of George Sr children and grandchildren moved back to Stockport for most left Great Longstone in adult years only George Jr and his brother John stayed in GL.

Gould Waterhouse Hulley Tomlinson

Great Longstone  Ashford  Bakewell  Stockport

Dear Peter

Having been so helpful with my Lidgetts, and thanks again for that, could you help on the other side of the family ie   Furber and Boote.  Eliza Furber b 1821 in Audlem married Stephen Boote bc1819 in Bickerton I have their marriage cert 1846 in Manchester cathedral dist.  Fathers are Sambrook Furber, butcher and John Boote, labourer.  Stephen and Eliza later lived in Tattenhall and I have lots of info from there down but am unable to trace the parents.  I did find Thomas Furber Eliza's brother also in Audlem in 1847 when his son Sambrook died.  Any chance you can find marriage records for either Sambrook or John or early census records?

Cheers

Lidgett
