Hi Peter,
With regard to my queries about the Hankinson/Clarke Marriage License on page 61 - I have received it today but it doesn't offer any new clues as to the groom's parents unfortunately. But it has given me a bit more info on the couple - the Bond was sworn by Joseph H and Phillip Clarke, both shown as Farmers, with Martha Clarke shown as a resident of Ashley (near Bowdon). The document is dated 1.5.1792 and the parties swear to pay a bond of £200 if the marriage fails to take place (the couple married on 3.5.1792 at St.Mary, Bowdon).
Do you know whether this was a standard fee? £200 sounds a bit steep to me and I wondered if the Bond might indicate the parties income levels?
Also, I thought Phillip Clarke might be Martha's father. There's one listed in the IGIndex, chr. at Rostherne 23.9.1750, married 1778 at Bowdon, but this date suggests he's unlikely to be her father.
If you have access to any records which might shed some light on these questions, I would be very grateful for lookups if you have the time. If not, any suggestions on how to unravel this tangle would be great!!
Many thanks,
Pixie
