Hi Peter,

Does the Index you have ever show parents names of brides and/or grooms? I'm trying to trace the parents of Joseph Hankinson b. 1769/70 who married Martha Clark on 3.May 1792 at St Mary's, Bowdon, by license. If the record doesn't show the parents, would you mind having a look for any other Hankinson marriages before 1770 in that area, or Altrincham, as the couples children were christened at Hale and Shaws Lane Presbyterian?
Many thanks,
Pixie

Hi Pixie.  :)

It dosen't really matter who you address your message to, there are several members with the resourses to help on this thread.

Unfortunatly the resourse is only an index of the marriages and gives very little information apart from the basic names dates etc, the orginal parish register entry may give a little bit more, but not as a general rule.

Do you have a copy of the licence and or bond from the marriage you mention ? if it servives a copy will be available from the Cheshire RO. The bond document may give you a clue as to parents.

There are two marriages around that time and area.

John Hankinson of Bowden and Susannah Williamson dated 23/January/1753 at Ashton on Mersey St Martins.

John Hankinson and Ann Bate 16/January/1769 at Wilmslow.

hope this helps

Hi Peter, :)

Thank you very much for your reply and the info about the other Hankinson marriages.
The details I gave about Joseph and Martha's marriage were obtained by another genealogist who looked in the Bowdon Parish Register. I do not have a copy of the Bond or License - I didn't realise CRO microfilmed entries were available as copies. I'll try to get one ordered!

Many thanks,
Pixie

Hi Chris I am just a beginner and I am searching for members of the Chesworth family in Lower Peover. My family of  Chesworths  lived in Allostock and were  mainly married at St Oswalds Church, Lower Peover. I have found Abraham Chesworth who married Mary Johnson on 13/2/1766, Thomas Chesworth born1739 who married Jane and William Chesworth born 1730 who married Jane born1738.Do your records show any Chesworths from Allostock married at St Oswalds at an earlier date as I am searching for their parents. Any help would be gratefully recieved. jud444

Hi Peter,

Regarding my earlier query about copies of Licenses held on microfilm at CRO - I e-mailed the Office and had a reply from the Archivist saying that they have located the Hankinson/Clark License, and I can have a copy for the princely sum of £2.95!! A bargain!!

Many thanks for your help Peter,
Best wishes,
Pixie

Hi Peter,

With regard to my queries about the Hankinson/Clarke Marriage License on page 61 - I have received it today but it doesn't offer any new clues as to the groom's parents unfortunately. But it has given me a bit more info on the couple - the Bond was sworn by Joseph H and Phillip Clarke, both shown as Farmers, with Martha Clarke shown as a resident of Ashley (near Bowdon). The document is dated 1.5.1792 and the parties swear to pay a bond of £200 if the marriage fails to take place (the couple married on 3.5.1792 at St.Mary, Bowdon).

Do you know whether this was a standard fee? £200 sounds a bit steep to me and I wondered if the Bond might indicate the parties income levels?
Also, I thought Phillip Clarke might be Martha's father. There's one listed in the IGIndex, chr. at Rostherne 23.9.1750, married 1778 at Bowdon, but this date suggests he's unlikely to be her father.
If you have access to any records which might shed some light on these questions, I would be very grateful for lookups if you have the time. If not, any suggestions on how to unravel this tangle would be great!!

Many thanks,
Pixie
