Hi,
would it be possible for someone to look up a marriage between William Dawson and Alice Wilson from around 1854?
Alice was born around  1839 in Weaverham.
The couple were living in Leftwich in 1871 with a 14 year old son also called William who had been born in Northwich/Leftwich depending which census is consulted.
They didn't appear to have the births of their children William, born about 1857 and Elizabeth, born about 1860, registered, so a baptism would be wonderful if anyone has registers for Northwich / Leftwich / Weaverham baptisms.
Any help with this family would be very much appreciated.
regards
Jean Sandra

Hi
I have had a good search around the indexes I own, and could not find a marriage, but one thing I did look at was the possibility that the children's births were registered but in the mothers maiden name IE before she met and "married" Mr Dawson, and found the following on the Cheshire BMD.
William Wilson 1858 Northwich, he does not appear as Wilson on the 1871 census.
Elizabeth Wilson 1861 Northwich, she also does not appear on the 1871, worth buying a birth certificate maybe ?

Hi Peter,
yet again you never cease to amaze me.
Why didn't I think of something so logical as looking under the mother's maiden name for the births?
I will order the certificates and see what happens.
Many thanks
Jean Sandra

Hi Peter,
Just looked on CheshireBMD and possibly found 5 children of William Dawson and Alice Wilson who were registered as Wilson. The last one a Henry Dawson Wilson born in Northwich in 1870. However the one birth certificate I do have belonging to this family was for Ada Alice Dawson born 16 March 1872. Subsequent children were registered as Dawson.
I'm not sure if some significant event happened between 1870 and 1872 (marriage?) or if they just decided to register as Dawson and pretend they were married. Perhaps the earlier children didn't belong to William, I must send for the certificates.
Regards
Jean Sandra

Peter,

Thanks for your efforts.

I was in England this week and saw there is a hamlet  (or wood?) Linley Wood right on the county border by Talke - no idea how this is designated in the census probably a sub-district of Alsager.

I cannot find any of the family in the 1871 census other than a possinble widowed Emma Baddeley in the Stoke area. Both Henrietta and Ellen married in Crewe in 1873 and 1875.

I could order Henrietta's birth crtificate - Ellen is my ancestor.

All the best and thanks

Roy

Hi Roy
Thanks for the prod, there is indeed a Linley Lane in Alsager, but only part of it seems to appear in the Cheshire census, the rest must be over the border in Staffordshire, unfortunatly I cannot check the Staffs side.
When searching through the Cheshire side I did come across some Baddiley's that may be relavant to your family, but none of the names you gave me.

RG9-2613-F120 Alsager

Sarah Baddiley 16 servant        born Talke of the Hill

RG9-2613-F117 Alsager

Mary Baddiley   head  widow 62  dressmaker  Hanley Staffs
Jane     ~          daug  unwed 22     ~                ~        ~
William Tunstall gran/son       17  ag/lab          Talke o t Hill
Elizabeth ~         ~    daug     13                        ~     ~ ~ ~
Selina      ~         ~     ~          11                       ~      ~ ~  ~

Think your next step would be to try a request on the Staffordshire board.

Thank you. Although a fruitless task for you this does help me in eliminating that possibility. I will take up your suggestion.
