George Chesters was baptized at Trinity Church in Chester 8 September, 1836, according to the IGI.

The Cathedral, St. John The Baptist and St. Mary On The Hill each have earlier cut off dates for their marriages on the IGI so it might be worthwhile to look at the records from those sources.

Hi

I am looking for a marriage of John Holt to Ann 1800--1810 or slightly before. They had a son George

baptised at St Bartholomew's Wilmslow in 1807. I can find no other children.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the welcome Jean and I really appreciate the time you spent looking for that elusive CHESTERS marriage.

There are no other children from that union -  but I did find a record of a marriage in 1844 for an Edward CHESTERS in Liverpool who might possibly fit the profile of my Edward (similar recorded occupations) and he gave his status as "bachelor".
I wonder if anyone knows about divorce records - if such a thing existed back then?
Or maybe Rector doing the baptism was "persuaded"  not to enter the illegitimacy in the baptismal record!  My speculation is running rampant here!

Thank you Beth for the other suggestions. Unfortunately I still came up empty.
Guess this is one of the things that is so intriguing about this field - the lingering unanswered questions!

Thank you both again.

Hi gillbil,

Nothing obvious, but there is this:

John HOLT m Hannah BAILEY 26 Dec 1802 Knutsford

That's the closest match.

Hi Cilla,

Divorce would have been very expensive and unlikely then.  It would be more likely that he remarried bigamously if he was ever married to Ann in the first place!

It might be worth a post on the main Cheshire board giving all the information that you have on both parties to see if anyone can spot anything for you.  If you do, please include the census refs if you have them.
