i am trying to find a marriage betwee a william gordon born abt 1791 in kirkham/lancaster to a cather - name possibly smith ?  i know his second wife was mary austin who was born in kirkham, lancs.
i think he married his first wife in cheadle, stockport

Hi Belinda,

No, it is only an index.  The parish register may have more information but it is unlikely to show ages or place of birth.

I am trying to trace most of my family but the main one so far is Washington, they were all from Odd Rode, Mow Cop, but their births/marriages, etc were registered at Congleton, Cheshire.

So my request is this please:-

I have found George Washington born 1808 and died in 1886 his wife was Fanny but I don't know her maiden name, (could you please find that one?), I think his father was Thomas Washington born 1786 who was a Butcher but I could be very mistaken as I thought my family were all coal miners.

I have been to my local library today and only just found out that if I go there I can have free access to Ancestry so am going to try that out either tomorrow or Wednesday;  I need to get the birth certificate for George Washington (born 1808 and died 1886) really to find out more.

George Washington married Fanny ?  so that George is not mine.  Shame!

Hi Jackie,

Francis and Fanny are interchangeable so it could be your George.  There are no birth certificates before civil registration began on 1st July 1837 so you will need to find his baptism in the parish records.  Have you found him on the census yet?  If not, I'd suggest you post on the Cheshire Lookup Request Board and we will try to help.  His birth place should indicate the most likely churches for his baptism.
