Hi there,
i can only say that the surname looks guaranteed to be often misspelled or mis-understood.
Also,as a young lad in 1891 he would have, I presume been ,with his parents..and perhaps 1881 not born.
I couldn`t find a birth entry that verified thr Richmond bit,in fact i couldn`t find a birth entry at all.
The marriage in 1900 is there...certificate will hopefully give father`s name,or perhaps a witness was a family member...sometimes you have to go sideways to go back.
Good Luck
CR

Hi Concrete

If there is no father's name on the marriage certificate then, as I'm sure you have guessed, he was quite possibly illegitimate.

I, too, have looked for him in 1891 and 1881 without success though most that I found with that name originated from France :-\

Is there an address for him on the marriage certificate that could be checked or could the marriage witnesses be helpful?

Hello casalguidi

Yes Ernest Frank Lagarde was illegitimate. The family story is; mother a servant in a large house, father was a visiting french soldier, all she required was for the child to take the fathers surname.

Marriage took place in High Wycombe, in 1900, unfortunately the witnesses give me no clues.

Thanks for checking

Concrete ???

Hi
donīt know why this caught my eye again, but I thought per haps your Ernest only later took the french name on.
Itīs a long shot but there canīt have been that many Ernest Franks in Richmond!!
Perhaps though in the meantime all your problems have ben resolved!

Here the reference
