1841 Census - GULLIVER
« on: Tuesday 07 March 06 10:39 GMT (UK) »
Help please; I am looking for Ellen (or Eleanor) Gulliver, who said that she was born in 1837 in Gilesgate Moor and daughter of James Gulliver. She had left home and was a servant girl in 1851.

Jennifer,
Many thanks, I think that you are spot on; she quotes Gilligate in another census. What a quaint spelling of Gulliver? Still, with a strong regional accent and unable to read or write, who can check it?
Sorry for a second request but what is the parish church?
Thanks again,
Terry

THe missing father - James Gulliver was my 3 x gt grandfather. My line descends from Ellens brother George.

I have Ellen on the 1861 census:

No. 8 Hunters Building, Rail Street, Dawdon, Seaham harbour
Rbt Henry Gardiner   H  m   36   Grocer                Born: Rainton, Durham
Jane Gardiner             W m   32                      Born: Seaham Harbour
Geo. Hw. Gardiner          S      8                      Born: Seaham Harbour

I'm afraid that I don't know much about james as the trail has gone a bit cold, but would appreciate any help you can give with the Gullivers

Terry,

Might it not be GULLIVER that was the quaint spelling, that gained sway and took over through time ?

I have wondered about this myself - the name gallagher is so close - but who knows?
During the 1830's/50s my own Gullivers have been variously listed as Gollopher/Goliver/Golifer/Golipher & Gallifor, with some of the same folks having different spellings for Baptisms, marriage & census. I suppose that's what happens if you rely on other people to write things down.  ::)

Jackie,
Sorry I haven't replied earlier but we have been away. I had picked up Ellen in 1861 and have some more detail on the Gulliver clan with all its variant spelling. Suggest we swap details - please contact.
