Charles Bromley; birth record? Staffordshire 1818

Hello all

I wonder if anyone can help me find the birth of Charles Bromley, probably in Kidsgrove, Staffordshire around 1818? I have found him on all the censuses up to 1891. In 1838 he married Mary Cope, and in the 1841 census they are living at Green Lane, Goldenhill, Staffs, with their daughter Ann. Next door are John (45) and Ann (40) Bromley with their children Lesse (13), May (10) and Eliza (7). I suspect John and Ann may be Charles' parents (partly because Charles later has a daughter he calls Lessey, a relatively unusual name). However, while I can find the three daughters of John and Ann on the IGI I can't find Charles!



I would be very grateful for any help!

St Thomas births doesnt show a Charles Bromley but there are five Bromley births.

Hannah 1849, Martha 1851 and Emma Ann 1854 to John & Amy Bromley of Kidsgrove;

Sarah 1842 to John and Prucilla Bromley of Goldenhill; and

Samuel 1842 to Thomas & Hannah Bromley of Acres Nook (in Kidsgrove).

There are at least 26 Cope birth entries.

All fathers were colliers.

By coincidence, reviewing my posts here......
I have a friend who has a family bible from the Bromley's at Green Lane, Kidsgrove.  It mainly lists lots of births and deaths and a couple of marriages.

The earliest birth date is 1812, the last one for Hannah and Jacob Bromley is 1831 then it restarts in 1845-1856 who are John and Amy Bromleys children.

The deaths are from 1848-1891.  The marriages are John Bromley 27 Feb 1845 who married Amy Riley; Hannah Bromley married Herbert Knapper 28 Jan 1867;  Martha Bromley married Moses Winkle 1868.

We too are looking for Charles Bromley and where he fits, is he John's brother?
My friend lives in Kidsgrove today.
Her paternal grandmother was Emma Ann Bromley who married George Farr 1871.
Please get back to me for the lists.

We are suspecting Newchapel St. James as the first lot of Bromley's listed in the bible were born there. (Try IGI?)

That family bible sounds a real find! It's quite a while since I was looking at the Bromley's but I know I haven't got much further with them. I can't fit any of the bible names you give with mine yet, but my Bromley's were certainly at Green Lane in 1841 and 1851 and I would be really interested to see the lists of names.

The only thing new that the IGI has turned up is a likely looking christening for Eliza Bromley on 31 Oct 1833 at Wolstanton Wesleyan, Tunstall; her parents were John Bromley and Ann Morpes. This could be the John and Ann living next door to Charles in Green Lane in 1841, who I think are Charles's parents, though this is still only a guess. These Bromleys are all so complicated - and there are so many of them! But we might still get them sorted, given time.

I only see my friend once a week at the family history centre so you'll have to wait till at least next week for the list, sorry.  She had mentioned Chalres Bromley before to me and I hadnt made the connection and she was just looking over my shoulder today as I was on RootsChat then exclaimed "that's my Charles Bromley!"

Why were you looking for him anyway?

I have encouraged her to look at RootsChat more often as its such a useful site to us family historians.  Hopefully feedback to you in seven days time, regards Gareth

Charles Bromley is my cousin's great, great grandfather. I got my cousin hooked on family history by sharing our joint relatives – now she's got me on the trail of her mother's side of the family, too. I would love to be able to finally pin down Charles's parentage. What relationship is Charles to your friend?
