Donaghadee - Blain and Maxwell

Donaghadee area Blain tombstones

Surfing I stumbled across a large colour photographic gallery of indexed tombstones in some Co Down graveyards, at the North of Ireland Family History Society (NIFHS) Charity number XR22524 ie www.nifhs.org/ I found it easy to check their Members interests in case someone else was already researching my line!  More importantly for many I then discovered under the section Members websites is an entry for Cardwell and Leckey Families with its own website www.codown.co.uk  he has another website www.yorick.plus.com/ulsterimages.  I investigated just the first one., Bill Cardwell’s copyrighted photographic work covers the not just for his family surname interests but  in that noble role of a supplier of information for free, he probably has a colour photograph for what looks like most tombstones in each graveyard. It’s an excellent piece of work. He covers
County Down Memorials:  Millisle Presbyterian; Templepatrick graveyard, Donaghadee has Blains; Abbey Church, Bangor; Whitechurch graveyard, Ballywalter; Donaghadee Parish Ballycopeland graveyard has Blain, Millisle; Greyabbey graveyard

A search for a series of books titled Gravestone Inscriptions by R. S. J. Clarke may be made in the Library Catalogue at this site http://www.ni-libraries.net
I think one of them covers the Donaghadee area.

Came across an old edition of "North Irish Roots" this evening under my stairs, it is dated Winter 1987.  In it there are some directories for Donaghadee and I noticed some names that may be interesting to you.

it seems to show Maxwells in Donaghadee from the 17th century

Maxwell This stone was erected by ... Maxwell in memory of John Maxwell who died  14 Jun 1739  aged 70 years. Margaret Maxwell otherwise Haslet died  18 Mar 1762. Ann Maxwell otherwise McCulloch died  02 May 1778  aged 68. William Maxwell died  11 Jul 1794  aged 48. Robert Maxwell died  28 Dec 1801  aged 47. Robert Maxwell died  28 Feb 1805  aged 94. Margaret Maxwell otherwise Kelly died  01 Jan 1826  aged 72, all of Ballyrare in the parish of Donaghadee. Also Primrose Maxwell otherwise Bankhead of Donaghadee died  02 Nov 1836  aged 57. Also the said Charles Maxwell of Donaghadee who died  05 Oct 1846  aged 59 years.

Rab's message about gravestones prompted me to check the Cliften St (Belfast) Registry of graves at "Glenravel online" and lo and behold, there is William Maxwell died of Cholera aged 52.  He was described as a Barman from Donaghadee.  Date 15 August 1832.
Funny how one thought can stimulate another thought and turn up something unexpected

Thanks Rab!  My feeling is that there could be two major reasons for Mary Maxwell and William Blain to be married in Donaghadee in 1812 - one being that they were from Portpatrick or Stranraer and taking advantage of the marriages done by this Alexander Goudy in Donaghadee (maybe one or other was young and they didn't have permission) - or that Mary Maxwell was from a local family. William Blain is described later (1841 census, Stranraer) as born in Wigtownshire. So anything I can get on Donaghadee Maxwells is good!  Also, I don't know what villages or towns would be nearby that Mary Maxwell might be from, if not Donaghadee itself.

I think that her father may have been John. Mary had a son named John Maxwell Blain. Robert is another possible family name.
