Ordering marriage certificates in Ireland

Hello Everyone

I was hoping someone might be able to guide me in the right direction.

I have a marriage date for  my Thomas Holmes and Margaret Carland who married in Raphoe in Donnegal Ireland  in 8 March 1860.

I would like to obtain this certificate however I am not sure were to get it from in Ireland and who to write to.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Hi,

Do you know their religion? If they were Anglican (Church of Ireland) you an apply to the GRO in Dublin. See my website for details. If they weren't, you have to go to parish records as general registration of marriages in Ireland only started in 1864. Raphoe catholic parish records only start in 1876 for baptisms and marriages so you may be disappointed.

There are no Carland or Holmes families recorded in Raphoe in the Griffiths valuation which in Donegal was taken in 1857 so they may both come from another parish where records start earlier. 1876 is very late.

There are a number of Holmes families spread all over Donegal in the Griffiths Valuation but only one Carland, John in Druminaw, Clonleigh, a parish adjoining raphoe so I'd start there. These records start much earlier.

Thanks alot for your reply and the info.
I had a  search through my info and found out that their religion was  Presbyterian. So now I gather I can apply to GRO in Dublin for their marriage certificate. Is that correct?

Once again thanks for your help when it comes to tracing my family history in Ireland,  I really don't know where to start. So far I have the Holmes's from Donnegal and the Grady's from Kerry.

Hi,

That's right. Anglican marriages (and I think Presbyterian counts being non-catholic) were registered from 1845 so the GRO should have it.

I have a Thomas Holmes and a Margaret McCausland who had a son Thomas baptised in Raphoe on the 25th May 1860.

There were loads of Holmes in Raphoe during the 1850's and were there from the early 1600's

Very interesting that you have in your family a Thomas Holmes marrying a Margaret McCausland and having a son bapt 1860.

My Thomas and Margaret had a son Thomas as well born circa 1860.
Unfortunately I don't have much on this family only hearsay at this stage, except for the marriage date of Thomas and Margaret in Raphoe 1860. Though Thomas parents were John Holmes and Susan McIntyre and Margaret's parents were John Carland and Lily Gardiner.
