Brooks family Middlewich/Tetton
« on: Friday 03 March 06 15:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi all. First posting so here goes!

Looking for info on the Brooks family who worked on the canals as boatmen.  Were living in Tetton, Middlewich in 1861 in Bridge Cottage.

Richard Brooks b. abt. 1818 Leicestershire
Martha b. abt.1819 Leicestershire
Charles Brooks b. abt.1842 Leicestershire
William Brooks b. abt. 1844 Leicestershire
Augustus Brooks b.  abt.1846 Cheshire
John Brooks b. 1851 Leicestershire
Alice Brooks b. abt. 1853 Leicestershire
Joseph Brooks b. abt. 1856 Tetton, Cheshire
Ann Brooks b. abt. 1858 Tetton, Cheshire
Mary Brooks b. abt. 1861 Tetton, Cheshire
Richard Brooks b.  ?   Ode Rode, Cheshire

Particularly interested in Ann Brooks who had illegitimate child in 1876 in Butt Lane, Talke O'the Hill, Staffs but I can find no trace of her since.  Assume she may have died as child brought up by her brother. :(

Branch of family also lived in Whaley Bridge on Cheshire/Derbyshire border.

Hi tomkin

I believe Ann Brooks lived with her mother and brothers/sisters at Butt Lane - her father may have died by then.
The family are listed at Congleton Road, Butt Lane on the 1881. (Ann is not with them.)
The brother who raised Ann's child was John Brooks, who married Mercy Armstrong.  They lived in Whaley Bridge on the Cheshire/Derbyshire border.
I don't know of any connection with Pedleys and Congleton.

Thank you for your reply

Good luck

Hi Gnatalee,
Can you give me the head of the household and
where born + D.O.B.  so I can see if I can find the details on the 1881
census on familysearch.
Tomkin.

Hi

When in Butt Lane the head of the household is Martha (also known as Mary on some census).  They weren't overly accurate in stating where they were born (a) because they were illiterate and also because, being on canals, they moved around quite a lot.  I know on the 1881 census the family, other than Martha, were given as being born in Odd Rode (which they weren't).  Martha sometimes stated she was born in Rugby, but I actually believe she was from Leicester - and there is a place called Tugby in Leicestershire.  She certainly got married in Leicester - I have the marriage cert.

Thanks for your interest.

Hi Gnatalee,
I am sorry mate but I cannot find the family on the
family search 1881 census. It can be difficult to sometimes to use.
Is it possible to give me the details as they appear on the 1881
census and where you got the details from.
When I checked my records the only Brook(e)s family that I could find
that lived in Congleton road in 1881 is a different one.
I got these details some time ago by trawling the whole area for
Brook(e)s families in the 1881 census.
      Sorry for the trouble.
Tomkin

Hope this is okay.  Thanks for help.
