census L/U please Crofts in sheffield area
« on: Thursday 02 March 06 13:40 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find more about the following, and have them in 1861 census:
Parish: pitsmoor, Sub district 5 brightside Sheffield.
10, Woodside lane

Wm CROFTS 42 b.Troway, Derbyshire!
Ann, wife 37 b. Troway, yorkshire!
Arthur, son  14 b. Troway
John, son  9 b.Troway
Samuel, son 6, b. Troway
Alethea, daughter  0, b. Troway. (My great gran)

I've found them in 1881 in Attercliffe cum Darnall.

Ideally i'd like info from other censuses. Also I can't find the marriage of William and Ann (Rodgers was her maiden name, I think). There are lots of Wm Crofts, but none seem to tally with an Ann!

Lovel(le)from Claremorris, O'Neil from Mayo, Barrett(Sligo) in 1820's and 30's then Holywell. .Mason from Biggin,Selby,Brayton,Hambleton,  Yorks  and Rodgers Crofts from Sheffield area; Bardens from Yorkshire and Oldham, Buckley Wood, Lancs/ Yorks, and Walsh, Oldham

Thanks John and Brian. So William WAS born in Derbyshire. Maybe I was having problems cos every time I did a look up I thought he was born in yorkshire..There was a mistake on 1861 census!

I'm thrilled with this info. thanks Tuppie!!
Now I've got more idea where and when to search for William's marriage.
Does anyone know what a 'table blade forger' is?

hello Kathy,

The forging of blades for table knives was a two-man process. The forger was the senior man. He put the metal bar from which the blade would be made into the hearth and judged, from its colour, when it was hot enough. Then he took the bar out with tongs and laid it on an anvil where his mate, the striker, hammered it out with a two-handed hammer under his instructions. The forger would turn the blade or put it back in the hearth to reheat it as required.

Have found the marriage of Ann Rodgers and William Crofts and have got the cert. What is odd is that Ann's address at time of marriage is 'Nursery'. She was 19, so I suppose she was working there?? There is nothing written under Rank or profession. If anyone has any ideas ...?

William's address is South St Park. Does this still exist?
I don't expect any replies, just hope for more info!
They married in Sheffield in the Parish church, sept 22nd, 1844
