Hi Moira and Carole

Rather than leave you wondering what had happened I thought to let you know that up to this morning I have not received the Marriage certificate for William Fish and Jane Godbold. The records office tell me that they are snowed under with requests, so I am in the queue somewhere.

I will be away from home for several weeks from tomorrow, so the answer will sit on the doormat until I return in May.

Hi

Yes, I am heading for Honolulu with the temps inthe 80's, so that can't be bad. I am teaching for a Weavers Guild and will also find time for a weeks break too. :)

Don't miss the Kodak Hula Show and try and fit in a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Centre - particularly the evening show.  It's staffed and performed by Mormon students from the nearby University and is an excellent show (I think we are very much in their debt when it comes to researching our family history)

Hi Carole

Didn't get to visit your suggested events, but did get to the Big Island in the sunshine to go walking across the Volcano crator, no not the active one :).

Also took in the Tropical gardens and and Orchid farm so was well pleased with the trip.

The weather in Honolulu was dire rain upon rain.

Am now in sunny Baltimore.

Hi Roddy

Shame about the weather but we have been there four times at different times of the year so it can be hit and miss.

I guess it was more than a "pineapple shower" as the locals call them.

At least you were nearer than us - I live in the UK

Hi Carole and Moira

I arrived back on Wednesday and as I expected an envelope from GRO was on the doormat along with a mountain of other mail.

Here are the details.

William Fish from Loddon married Jane Godbold from Bungay  27th May 1845. Age is recorded as 'of full age' William's occupation is Gardener, Jane a Spinster.
James Fish a Cordwainer and Robert Godbold are the fathers. Witnesses are
Susannah Fish, John Cole Copeman and James Cole Copeman.

I will have to put this in the tree and see where this has got me. :)

Regards

Roddy

Hi

According to the 1841 census (just gone online) Jane Godbold was b 1826 and at the time of the census was working as a servant for the Timpson family in Great Yarmouth.  Mr Timpson was a silversmith by trade.

It's very likely Jane was older than 15 at that time as this is the instructions given to enumerators at the time of the 1841 census:

"Write the age of  every person under 15 years of age as it is stated to you.
For persons aged 15 years and upwards, write the lowest of the term of 5 years within which the age is.
Thus -for persons aged 15 years and under 20 write 15

This is the 1851 census for Claxton Norfolk.  A cordwainer was a shoe maker

George Fish 1 b Claxton Son
James Fish 68 b Kirstead Norfolk Father  - shoemaker
Jane Fish 29 b Aldeby Wife
William Fish 32 b Loddon Head  -  Gardener
