Desperate for any census info on the Farquharson's - please help!
« on: Wednesday 01 March 06 11:19 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me find out more about the Farquharson's in the North East?
All I do know is that Thomas Farquharson was born in 1856 in Seaham Harbour, his mother Ann was born in 1832 in South Shields and was a widow.  In 1901 they lived in Eston, near Middlesbrough and in 1881 they lived at 5 Adelaide Row in Dawdon, although the spelling of the surname has confusingly changed to Ferguson and says Ann was born in North Shields.
Can anyone help me find out anymore about Ann's husband, (who may have been called John or Thomas Henry) and Ann's maiden name please?  Any information would be gratefully received, as feel as if I've been banging my head against a brick wall!  Thanks tootz

Thanks very much for your replies, Audrey as far as I'm aware the Farquharson's were not referred to as Farquhar, although I've also found many listings for them in the Newcastle area and I don't know anything about any Jamaican link.
Laurina thanks for your replies, I now know Ann's husband was called John and his year of birth which can help me find Ann's maiden name, I can't believe they changed the spelling of the surname again!  Once again thank you. Tootz

In fairness if you look at the original it is more likely to be FERGUSON.  It was transcribed online as FERGERSON.

Enumerators would write names as they believed they were spelt ~ often as they were pronounced.

My geography of this area is poor but there is a John Ferguson born in Dec Quarter 1858

ref : John Ferguson ~ Stockton 10a 58.

If it was correct you might be able to find his mothers maiden name.

Hi Laurina,

It looks as though John Ferguson was born approx. in 1826 in South Shields,   (about 15 miles north of Seaham, Stockton is about 20 miles south from Seaham.)

It could be possible that he had a son called John but he doesn't seem to be mentioned in any of the records I've looked at, but it may be worth looking into, as he may be a relative of some kind.

Thanks Tootz
