« on: Tuesday 28 February 06 20:18 GMT (UK) »
i am just wondering if there were  any churches in south shields in 1700's apart from st hildas as i am trying to find the christenings of my 3x great grandparents they married at st hildas in 1820 and they are listed as being of this parish but i cannot find either of them in the christening records for st hildas

faithfully

Hi compo.

It is my understanding that "of the parish" simply means they were residents of the parish at the time of the marriage.  It doesn't necessarily mean they were born there.  Do you have any other clues that might suggest they were born somewhere else?

Do you have any census information for either of them, this might give a clue.

Always worth looking in North Shields too as they often popped over the river.   If you can get to the local record offices then you can search the transcripts of all the parishes in that area and you may be lucky.   If you publish the names someone may do it for you.  How did you find their marriage?

Do you know the names of their children?  In 1851 in South Shields there is a Green family headed by an Ann age 55, with children called Margaret 15, James 12 or 13?, Maria 8 and Edward ?   (age hard to read.  Could be 27?  he is a coal miner. )   That would make Ann about 20 at marriage which is possible.  James may have died by then.    It is worth a thought anyway.

Forgot to put the reference - HO 107 2399 F632
That particular Ann was born in Benwell, Northumberland.  She is a widow and annuitant so that might mean her husband had enough money to leave a will.   Possibly another avenue to explore.   Do you happen to know what he did for a living?
