Nearest schools to Southport Road 1930s/40s/
« on: Friday 01 October 04 00:16 BST (UK) »
Hi
Would anyone know the names of the schools that were nearest to  Southport Road,Bootle,Liverpool 20.
That is primary/junior/senior?
Would there have been all girls/all boys or mixed.
Family were R.C. so that might denote which schools attended.
or whether when older if they had passed their 11+.
Lots of questions I know,

Would there be any lists held by education authorities of entries.
Hope this isnt too hard a question,
but lots of clever people on this site.
regards
bennett

Hi, I used to live off Southport Road up until the 1980s when I moved to the north east. I went to school Bootle Girls Grammar on Breeze Hill, which is, if you don't know a main road running off Southport Road.

The schools in the area are as follows

St Augustines RC mixed senior
St Georges Cof E mixed senior

St Robert Bellarmines RC junior
Roberts Junior School non denom
Orrell/ Linacre Lane School ( I'm not sure about this)non denom
There was also Christ Church School

All these schools and possibly a couple more were all around that area. I didn't live far from there and went to grammar school with a girl who lived in about 450.

The name Donnelly rings a bell.......what age are talking about for the people you're  looking for?

To get a list of schools try friends reunited and put the L20 postcode in you'll get a list of schools up

Also go onto the Bootle knowhere site and post a message. Hope this is of some help....ekell3

Hi, just read the end of your message re ages, if they passed the 11 plus the nearest grammar school for girls was the one I went to which in the 1930s and later was known as Stuart College.

I'm not sure about the boys. There was the Salesian College a Catholic boys grammar which was about a half to a mile along Southport Road from 500 (this is now known as De Savio I think). There was also Bootle Boys grammar a non denom in Netherton about 2-3 miles away.

There were quite anumber of Catholic secondary schools around that area but the ones I gave you in the first place are all around the area you're talking about. The only other girls Catholic grammar was Mater Misericordia in Maghull about 4 miles away or Seafield Convent Crosby about the same distance...hope you can understand this...ekell3

hi, I lived in Bootle from just after I was born in 1956 to 1984 when I moved to the north east, however my very large immediate family all still live in around Liverpool.

try posting a note on the Bootle knowhere site, lots of people read it from Bootle area, it might turn something up

Also, if you live near Liverpool try a visit to the library in William Brown street whci has a large FHC.

I'm rather new to this so you could try the lancashire lookups page someone more experienced might be able to point you in the right info direction.

I've tried BMD putting a surname and date in and that' come up with the goods, there's also 1837.com and Church of the Latter Day Saints. I also found a site which listed christenings in Liverpool , when I find it I'll let you know the address.

In the meantime give me a shout if you need any more help..happy hunting...regards ekell3

Hi Bennet,

Your looking for schools near to your friends house 500 Southport Rd Bootle.
There's one school no one mentioned which is about 500yds away from your friends house.
Which is St Monica's R.C. Aintree Rd which was boys only.

Also St Monica's Fernhill Rd, for infants, and junior girls, which was opposite St Monica's church. The junior boys and girls met 4yrs later at St Monica's seniors, the other end of Fernhill Rd.St Robert Bellamines juniors also went to St Monica's seniors as well.

The seniors closed down about 1963 and they all went to a new school called St Augustines in King Ave, which was demolished in 1990s.

I was born in 1953 in King Ave which is about 50yds from your friends house, and went to all these schools.Anyone who lived in this area and was R.C.would have attended St Monica's, I am 99% sure of this.

You could also try putting a message on Liverpool ex pats, (icliverpool.com) I think. Also on the Bootle message board. St Monica's is also on Friends Reunited

I hope this will be helpful
Cheers Eddy
