Help reading name please
« on: Monday 27 February 06 18:33 GMT (UK) »
My gr.gr grandparents were John and Rose Neeson and are believed to have come from the Toomebridge area.  However, I am having difficulty making out what Rose's maiden surname was.  Can anyone advise as to what it might be please?

Hi Charlotte, might it be McCann? or McCiann  ::)

If you show more of the cert maybe we can go by some of the other bits of writing and see if it helps

Thanks Steve and Colette.

I had thought the name was McCann or McCrann and enlarged the image in order to determine which it was.  However, having seen the enlargement I can't be certain that it is either of these.  I really find this old handwriting difficult!

Here (I hope) is a bigger sample of the document.

Hi Beresford,

Hadn't thought of that one!  It looks as though it might fit  - except can't see the "tale" of the g.  I think I'm going to have to keep trying to find the marriage records but so far can't find any John Neeson marrying a Rose.

Thanks anyway

I've just logged on here after a long while off.  My grandparents are buried in Moneyglas Cemetery - there are a few Neeson's buried there.  Rose's name might be on one of the headstones - don't know where you live, but it might be worth writing to the cemetery or even making a trip there!

Lovely neat writing, but it's quite a different style from most I've seen.

Quite a while since this was originally posted... John Neeson married Rose McCann in Bellaghy Roman Catholic Church in 1850, just west of Toomebridge / the Bann.
