Hi Tanja,

Thanks very much for the information you have found for me (really appreciated).

In answer to your questions:

1891 -  No, I hadn't noticed a 'Salter' with Amy, thanks for pointing that out to me.

1851 - Yes, Sarah was his second wife.

1861 -  :P definetely were joking!

1891 - Yes he is the right one.

Details of Barton Ernest's other children:

Alice Maud 1886, Edith Ellen 1881, Fanny Louisa 1883 and Stephen Thomas 1884.  I believe they were all born in Arreton, IOW.

If you could find out anything more relating to Barton Ernest and his family, it would be extremely helpful, especially in regards to Alice Maud.  Alice came to mainland England around the turn of the century with her guardian Mary Hannah Watson (not sure if this will help at all).

Thanks

Dollycat

There's a Fanny Barton age 17, general domestic servant, b. IOW Freshwater
with a family named Lambert in Bournemouth on the 1901 census.

Hi Tanja,

Unfortunately, aside from Stephen Thomas, Alice M and Fanny are not the Bartons I am looking for  :(  Alice M was born in Calbourne and Fanny in Godshill.

Thanks for looking.

Do you mean you don't think it's her father Ernest either  ???  ???

edit: Have had a thorough look and you're right. Very sorry. I can trace an Ernest born ca. 1860 Ryde  :-\

PS. I can't see any other candidate born Calbourne.

Hi Tanja,

I don't think Ernest is her father as he was called Barton Ernest and as far as I am aware was never married to a 'Caroline'.  I do know of another Ernest Barton in my family but do not know who he married etc. so maybe it is him.

No, I was not aware that birth places changed from census to census, thank you for letting me know that.  However, I did know about ages changing.

I looked Alice M up on the IOW BMD records and found my relation born in Calbourne and the Alice you found born in Ryde.

It looks like this is it for this search ??? thanks very very much for all your help. :)

Oops - had already edited my previous post - SORRY!! Above Ernest is definitely not the right one.

I can't seem to find them in 1901, as a matter of fact. As far as names/birthplaces are concerned, I think we had found the right ones in 1891 and Barton was down under Ernest, that's why I broadened the search.

Sorry, can't help further.

Tanja  :)

Sarah Salter b.1837 -Stephen Barton's niece in the Census - became his 2nd wife and they married in 1860 (Newport Registry) - Sarah Ann's own mother was the sister of Steven Barton's 1st wife Ann Lowe - Sarah Ann herself was well known to  the  Barton family, at Pleasant View Cottage Arreton, having grown up with Stephen and Ann Lowe after her own mother died. Sarah Ann herself was married in 1855 age 22 and brought her two stepchildren into Stephen's  household (her husband was in the Royal Navy and went 'missing')- . The Salters and Bartons were Bible Christians and Stephen  was Steward of the Hale Common Methodist Chapel. When Stephen Barton's 1st wife Ann Lowe died he was left with 8 children, 5 under 10 years - so Sarah Ann Salter whom they all knew became the 'mother' to the family and his 2nd wife. Cheers David Barton
