As their first child was born in Kent I'm wondering if they met and married there. There is an Eliza Mckendrick born Birmingham living in Shipborne, Kent in 1861 but she is only 10 :-\ Can't see a marriage for her.

Hi Charles,

If everything else fails, you can still order one of the children's birth certs. I can see for instance:
Selina Ellen Rickwood
Birth June quarter 1872
West Ham
4a 75

Agree with Tanja, ordering one of the children's birth certificates is probably your best bet to find Eliza's maiden name.

I am so thrilled at  how kind you all are in helping me. I only came across this site by accident and now I am totally hooked.  I will pick up on your suggestion, thanks. I am a complete novice at this but keen to learn. I have posted a reply on anothers request as I have photos of someone elses Gt gt gt....  This is great community.
I have some more info that may or not help. The east kent militia connection has drwan blanks so far!

Eliza Rickwood had her first child 27 Mar 1863 called John in Patrixbourne Kent In the 1871 census John and the familly lived 12 stephenson st Wesr Ham but was declared to be 5yr old implying dob 1866. now we know she married her husband William sept 1864 in West ham so presumably married after the child was born. ?illegitamate  Now I also know as I have his passbook that William was in the East Kent Militia payroll no 1950 he drew uniform as follows :-Woolwich 1858 Aldershot 1859 and Portsmouth 1860. He jotted down names and addresses in it also and had written in Johns dob details. Also I have Eliza's gold pocket watch dated 1862 with her name on the seperate winder which has a seal on the end. The family rumour it was awarded  for nursing service onboard ship yet she would only have been 15yr old so could this have been her mothers?? but this would have been very early for ships nurses. The family have referred to an Elliza Sharp(e) ?? links to silver and sheffield but all total rumour and suposition and may be complete red herrings

Cheers everyone
LINMACK.

Hi Linmack
You lucky thing  :D So lovely to have artifacts, makes people so much more real.

As John was born in Kent I would imagine either they were married there 62/3 or yes he was born before they married - in which case that  West Ham marriage might be yours.

Will have another look around in 61 for Eliza

Hi Linmack,

I'm not sure what we are exactly searching for now but going back to your initial query, I can see the following birth on the complete indexes:

September quarter 1870
Birth Elizabeth Lamb Rickwood
West Ham 4a 41

Lamb = perhaps maiden name?

Tanja  :)

Edit Can't find a marriage for Eliza Lamb in Sep 1864.
Marriage William Rickwood Sep 1864 West Ham 4a 45

Well there is this young lady - kind of fits with family rumour, but as you say could be a red herring :D Worth holding on file till you have her maidename confirmed. Till you get a birth certificate for on eof the children, probably little more can be done.
Cheers Jan

Hi Linmack,

I have been having a look at this family again.  A William Rickwood was married in West Ham RD in the Sept Q of 1864 (4a 45).  On the same page is an Eliza Sharp!

Furthermore, Elizabeth Rickwood and Alfred Bateson had a son called George Irton Bateson who, according to the 1911 Census, was know as Irton.
