I have found my Grandfathers records in the 1891 census showing him and his brother and sister living in the Chorlton Workhouse but cannot find where he came from before this. Has anybody got access to Manchester Archives or that workhouse if so, could they look up for details on my Grandad
his name was at that time Frederick William Roscoe born 1879 son of Margaret Roscoe formerly Coonen or Cooner nee Grundy. His half brother was an Albert Edward Roscoe born 1883 and a sister Lily born 1881. All at that time know by the Surname Roscoe.
Lily and Frederick were born to Margaret Coonen or Cooner infact when Lilly was born her and Margaret were stated as living at the Witherington Union Workshop.
Grandad was sent to the training ship in Isle of Wight in circa 1893-94, the other two were sent to Canada as homechildren.
It has been a story in the family that granddad deserted the training ship and went and joined the Army in 1898 where he stayed until he and his family immigrated to New Zealand in the 1930s.
Any help in this matter would be appreciated.
