I'm very new to this. Someone has traced my mums side back to 1805 but I would like to trace my fathers side back. I don't have much information  apart from my Dads name was Reginald William John Smith and was born in Lutterworth in 1919 and his Mums maiden name was North, I don't know her christian name. She also had 2 other children Fredrick who lived in Nuneaton who married someone called Florence (Flo) and Jean Smith who married her Cousin George and lived in Lutterworth. How hard do you think this could be?  Can anyone give me any tips how to get started please. Thanks Barry

Hi Barry,
Welcome to rootschat.Oh dear ,not the easiest of surnames to research but im sure you can find out more.
Probably the first step would be to obtain you fathers birth certificate which will tell you his fathers and mothers names and occupations.
You can obtain certificates from the ONS website for £7 if you know the General Records Office reference.
Then you may be able to find Regs father on the 1901 Census and work back from there.
A good site for births,marriages and deaths is FreeBMD but records are sparse after1910.
You could try Ancestry.com which will give you all the Censuses and access to actual records of births marriages and deaths up to the present day.They used to do a free trial or you could buy credits or join up for the year ,I have found them invaluble when researching.
The local records centre for the Leicestershire area is worth investigating too .
If you can find  Regs father another post on rootschat will probably bring results.

I had a feeling I would have to send for my fathers birth certificate. As you say Smith is not one of the easiest surnames to research especially if you have no info. Thanks gain Barry

My fathers name was George and mothers Jean they were 1st cousins. We lived in Dunton Bassett which is near to Lutterworth I had an Uncle Fred who lived in Nuneaton who had a brother called John (Jack). I believe my fathers parents were John & Ellen Smith who had 7 children, Mary,John,James,George,William,Edith & Edden. My fathers father was also called George and he was born in 1884 in Brackley Northants.
