FINLAY
« on: Tuesday 21 February 06 18:56 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage of John Finlay/Findlay to Jane Russell on 18 October 1823, Presbyterian, Down, Ireland.  I have the birth of their son John Finlay on 21 April, 1829, Killinchy and another son William Russell Finlay in January 1831, Killinchy.  I do not have the birth of a third son, Samuel Finlay, my grandfather.  Samuel died (aged 58) in 1893, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  On his death certificate his parents were given as John Finlay - Farmer and Jane Russell.  Any Co Down help most gratefully received.

Hi, I’m also a descendant of John Finlay and Jane Russell. Their children are listed below.
They are transcripts from the Killinchy Presbyterian Church registers; however they did join the Killinchy Non-Subscribing Church. Apparently the register followed the parishioners.
Patrick Finlay was my g.g.grandfather. His wife and three of his children all went to Scotland.
I have never investigated if any of the other siblings did, however I do know that my grandmother has cousins in Newtonards and possibly Belfast after WWI.
The wedding entry for John Finlay and Jane Russell states John Finlay of Killinchy and Mary Russell daughter of William Russell of Balloo. Witnesses William Russell and Jane Hoddard both of Balloo.

John Finlay
sp: Jane Russell (m.10 Oct 1823)
Magdeline Finlay (c.1 Sep 1824-Killinchy,Killinchy,Down,Ireland)
Mary Finlay (c.22 Nov 1825-Killinchy,Killinchy,Down,Ireland)
2. Jane McCann Finlay (c.15 Apr 1827-Killinchy,Killinchy,Down,Ireland)
2. John Finlay (c.21 Apr 1829-Killinchy,Killinchy,Down,Ireland)
2. William Russell Finlay (b.1831-Killinchy,Killinchy,Down,Ireland)(The register was torn and the date missing)
2. Patrick Finlay (c.18 Nov 1833-Killinchy,Killinchy,Down,Ireland;d.18 Mar 1905-Killyleagh,Downpatrick,Down,Ireland)
sp: Agnes Quinn (b.Abt 1834-,,Down,Ireland;m.30 Apr 1851;d.27 Oct 1908-Glasgow,Garngadhill,Lanarkshire,Scotland)
2. Annabella Finlay (c.22 Apr 1836-Killinchy Pres,Killinchy,Down,Ireland;d.Bef 1841-,Killinchy,Down,Ireland)
2. Samuel Finlay (c.31 May 1838-Killinchy,Killinchy,Down,Ireland)

The non-subscribing Presbyterian Church did a census of members in 1841 and I have the family group as follows: - John Finlay, Jane, Magdelene, Mary Jane John, William, Pat and Samuel

Many of these records are on the IGI as well.

Hi, I also am related to Samuel Finlay - my Great Grandfather. His son James, my Dad Tom (sixth of six), then me Jim. I'm really just starting out on researching my family tree, but I would be happy to share info. Of Samuels children, I only know of John (m 1893: Elizabeth Fisher - 3 children) and William (m 1893 also: Mary Blackley - 5 children)
My journey in search of my roots begins with these names. And every one I find creates two more questions.
Finlay Anderson Laurie Sneddon Allan Douglas Currie Smith Torrance Hendrie Russell McLatchie McLeod Collins Prentice
Why did I not start this search 40 years ago?

John and Jane were my g.g. grandparents.  Their son John was my g.grandfather.  John married Mary Jane Todd.

I've already "met" Jim through a lady researching the Todd family.

Its great to meet other cousins!

My branch emigrated to the States.

Does anyone have the history before John and Jane?

Thanks! Bob

Unfortunately I have been unable to find John and Jane Russell's deaths.  They were alive in 1863 when son Samuel was married.

I looked at the surnames posted by Christopher.  This one is of definite interest:

.     John     FINLAY     .     Newtownards     son of John Finlay ; aged 22 married Frances Graham 20 Oct 1851

This is my g. grandfather's first marriage.
