Valley City
« on: Monday 20 February 06 23:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,
My best friend and I had a very good adventure over the weekend and I wanted to share it with everyone. I hope you get as big a laugh as we did at the time.
I was looking up my family history, and I find out that two of my great uncles founded a town in southern Indiana in the 1800's. I am thinking...Wow! This is great. So I tell my best friend, you have to go with me to see this town that my rellies founded. She is all for it. So we set out with our map, and we know how to get to Valley City. That is the name of the town. We get down close, and there is a sign on the highway, that says, Valley City 4 miles to the left. So we turn off the highway and go down this country road. Now, you have to know Indiana and if you dont, I will paint a picture for you. You go down a country road in southern Indiana and you will see one of two things...either, cow pastures, or empty fields. We see both on our way. It is actually very pretty, because it has hills and valleys. So we are going along and come across a few houses close together and a church. I check the mileage, and it is 4 miles from the highway.  My friend asks me, is this it? I am thinking, this cant be it...this isn't a town. So we turn around and head back alittle and turn off onto another road and go down a few miles and see nothing but fields and more pastures. Then we hit a dead end because the road ends at the river. So we turn around once again and pull off to the side of the road and look at our map again. So we see that if we go to another town, and head west, we will run smack dab into Valley City. Great! So we get back on the first country road again, and head west. We get to the town we want, and now we think we know what we are going to find....and it isn't good. The town we went to, and I am not kidding...was a total of 5 houses in a block...and that was it. So now we have this bad feeling coming over us as we look at each other. So we check the map again...and this town, or so called town is on the map...but it isn't a town. So we decided, since we are here we should just go ahead and find Valley City. So we head out and go down this country road...and after a mile we know we are not going to see Valley City. Cause folks there is no way a town is going to spring up out of an empty corn field. Man were we right. We came across...and I am not kidding...3 houses...no sorry...2 houses, a double wide trailer, and a church...and that what was left of Valley City. So remember, if the place your rellies called home isn't the size of London...you may not want to find it because of possible disappointment. I hope you liked the story cause even if I didn't find what I was hoping for, it was still fun because I had my best friend there to share the laugh with me....Kitro.

I had a similar experience some years ago when driving back from San Diego to  San Francisco we decided to stop at a place called Sun City which had a convenient motel which boasted an Olympic size swimming pool.

Yes there was a Motel and a Deny's and about a dozen houses.  At least when I got back to the UK I could boast that I had swum six lengths of an Olympic size swimming pool underwater without coming up for breath.

LOL Kitro, at least you had fun looking for the 'City'.

Hubby and I were looking for a 'Valley' that Mum and Dad had heard was lovely.  They roughly gave us directions on how to get there.  My Mum and Dad went on ahead and we arrange to meet there for a picnic.  We reached a crossroad in the middle of nowhere with no road signs.  Did we go left or right  ???  We chose right.

As we were driving along, a fog suddenly descended upon us, and we drove on carefully down a hill and up the otherside.

We never did find the valley, and after driving round in circles for what seemed an eternity, we gave up and went home.

Later that evening Dad phoned and asked where had we been, they waited for ages for us, then eat the sandwiches and drank the tea because they were hungry.

I asked was it a nice place, was the scenery lovely ?

Dad replied, he didn't know, it was thick fog and they couldn't see a thing  :D
