Here is a Robert and Ann Brunton on the 1841 census for Cranston:

Brunton, Robert, m, 38, Ag. Lab. b. Midlothian
   "     Ann,    f, 40           b. Midlothian
   "     Mary,   f. 15           b. Midltohian
   "     Robert, m, 9            b. Midlothian
   "     Elizabeth, f, 7         b. Midlothian
   "     Janet      f, 3         b. Midlothian
   "     John       m, 2         b. Midlothian

Can't find them in the 1851 Midlothian census.

Look for Robert and Ann's birth in the IGI by using est. of birth date.
ie. If they married in 1825 they would have been born around 1800 give or
take 5 years. (On average)
Once you have a good idea who the parents were, type their names in the parents
only side, click, ALL and the list of all the children this couple have will come up.

For example, I looked for a Robert Brunton b around 1800 +/- 5 years and found 1
possible match:

Robert Brunton
Birth: 13th Feb. 1796 Dalkeith
Parents: Robert Brunton and Ann Grieve

Then using those parents I found this:

Robert Brunton, Mother: Ann Grieve
Exact Spelling: Off

This may or may not be the right people, but you have to narrow your
search down to possible places of birth, and occupations. For example
if your ancestor was a farm laborer or coal miner, it is unlikely he
would have been born in any of the parishes in the city of Edinburgh.
So Dalkeith would make more sense as would the surrounding parishes
of Inveresk, Newton, Newbattle etc as they were both farming and coal mining
communities. Anyone with a skill, would be more likely to be born in the city.

Here is the IGI: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
And Scotlandspeople: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
Census: http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Scotlandspeople will not give parents though for anyone born before 1855 so again
it is pretty much guess work. You also need to follow naming patterns in your search.
It all takes time, loads of it, and patience so you can spend hours and hours
trying out different names, dates, parishes etc to find what you need.

Good luck
Elaine

Thanks Elaine for all that info. will sift through it all & see what I come up with.  Appreciate your help. The reason you didn't find them on the 1851 census was that they were in Australia in 1850 & then on to NZ.

Thanks,
Noeleen.
