Kinnish Family
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 19:42 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any knowledge of the Kinnish Family from Santon?  Thomas Kinnish was born in 1877 approx, his brother Robert Henry was born in 1889 or 1890.

Strange that Thomas's birth and Robert and Margaret's marriage is not on the IGI.  And unfortunate as Robert and Margaret's marriage would give their father's names which would make it possible to find them in the birth records and the earlier censuses.

Robert Henry's birth is listed at www.lawsons.ca:
KINNISH, Robert Henry  4 Nov 1889  S  San  361  KINNISH, Robert  MOORE, Margaret

I think you will also find record of Robert Henry in the marriage and burial indexes on the same site.

Robert, Margaret and Thomas are in the 1881 IOM census (see www.familysearch.org).  You don't indicate how much or how little you already know about this family, or whether you have access to the censuses but given you have their approximate dates of birth I am guessing you have also already seen the 1891 census.  Let me know if you haven't and I will transcribe it for you.

So from the censuses we have Robert born approx 1852-53 in Braddan, Margaret born approx 1855-56 in Malew (both Braddan and Malew are neighbouring parishes to Santan, see http://www.isle-of-man.com/interests/genealogy/).  Closest match on the IGI for Robert is ROBERT KENNISH, Christening:  24 NOV 1850   Santon, Isle Of Man, Father:  CHRISTOPHER KENNISH, Mother:  ALICE COWIN.  No specific entry for Margaret stands out amongst the possibles.

There is a marriage between Robert Kinnish and Margaret Woodworth in Santan 28 MAR 1876.  But no resulting children listed.  Also only matching birth for Margaret Woodworth is in 1858 in Rushen.  Very confusing.

Hope I haven't just made things worse.

Hi

Thanks for the information.  Unfortunately I know very little about the family.  Robert Henry Kinnish who was born in 1889 married a lady called Jessie Louise Kneale in 1923 but she was his second wife.  I have been trying to find out what happened to his first wife but no-one seems to know her name.  The family don't seem to know if she died and that is why Robert remarried or one rumour is that she did a runner.  Any help would be much appreciated.

I have been researching my IOM ancestors for some time and we have a Christiana Kinnish who was my grt grt grandmother. She married Richard Tyson Burrows and lived on the Creggans farm Malew which is now the site of the airport terminal building. I have the Kinnish burial records for Stanton church if these would help your search although our Christiana is buried with her husband in Malew churchyard.

I have just found this website.  My grandfather was Thomas Christopher.  robert Henry was his younger brother.

I am in the process of trying to put together the family history and have lots of gaps.

Robert married Eleanor Lawson first - she was also known as Maria Bannon and she was adopted by the Lawsons.  she was born in 1891 and died Feb 2nd 1922 at Arbory.
They had 3 children, Margaret Elizabeth (Madge), Ella (still living at St Johns and Robert.

Robert then married Jessie Louise Kneale (Louisa) from Ballagarrett, Bride, They had one child Elaine.

From the second message rcorris.  robert Kinnish was the father of Thomas and Robert.  he married Margaret Woodworth (neeMoore). she had been married to Thomas Woodworth and lived in England.

I also have a Christiana Kinnish in the family tree and would love to find out more about her.

I would love to know your connection to Robert.  I remember meeting him and Louisa when I was a child.

thanks for your message; Christianna Kinnish was my great-great grandmother. her dates are 31-5-1846 to 18-4 1923. She was widowed young Richard tyson Burrows died in 1888 so she took over the tenancy of creggans farm and ran it with her son until the compulsory purchase order to build the airport. They all went to Kirk Michael but were all returned to Malew church for burial. If it is the same lady I will happily send you my research and family tree if you give me your email address. good luck with your searching
regards Maureen

Hi Maureen

there is a Christiana Kinnish m Richard Burrows on my family tree.  I have Christiana as being born in 1847. She had an older sister Isabella (1843-1874) and a younger brother John b. 1849.  Her parents were John Kinnish and Ann Bridson.  They lived at Ballajerai, Malew.

John Kinnish was a brother to Christopher Kinnish, b 1820, children of Daniel and Isabella.

Christopher Kinnish was my gg grandfather.  How do I contact you without sharing my personal information on the web?

Just started researching my ancestors and I am researching the Kinnish Family from Santon, can someone please tell me where Alan Kinnish and Stephen Kinnish fit in.  I remember visiting the family many years ago and meeting both Alan and Stephen.  I believe Stephen used to be called Billy by the family.
