The MA holds a lot of newspapers for the Staffs Derby border area and in fact DRO actually reccomend you visit there if you don't find what you want in their local studies library.  It used to be in the Attic area of the pottery there until it moved.  Their site used to list online what they held and was searchable but hasnt been for many a year now.  I visit it on a ad hoc basis and usually when I visit friends in Swad,  which reminds me I must get in touch with er

The opening times for the Magic Attic are

Monday   7.00 - 9.30 PM
Tuesday  2.00 - 5.00 PM
Thursday 2.00 - 5.00 PM and 7.00 - 9.30 PM
Saturday 10.00 AM - 1.00 PM

Telephone 01283 819020 (When Open)

Luckily I live just 15 mins walk away. My New Years resolution is to visit at least once a week this year. I've been down for the last two Saturday mornings and find it is very worthwhile.

They have a vast archive of Newspapers from Burton & Derby as well as Books, Maps and Photographs. They also have electronic databases, images and records and a lot more.

As Andrea has already said - everyone is very helpful and will always try and help you find what you are looking for.

Well first off - I only found out about RootsChat on Thursday because I had to go into Hospital for a little Op and I was chatting to the guy in the next bed and mentioned I was researching my family tree - he said he was doing the same and asked if I had been on RootsChat - I said I'd not heard of it. Came out yesterday and logged on for the first time - Funny how a chance meeting like that can lead you somewhere!

As for finding this thread - I logged on today and was just going through the Derbyshire posts as that's where alot of my research is based. I also typed in Swadlincote in the search and up came this post.
As I'd just come back from the Magic Attic I thought I'd add the latest opening times.

It certainly is Magic - I wish every town had one - It would make our job a lot easier - They have such a wealth of history there it just makes me wonder how much has been lost in other places - newspapers are a wonderful insight into what was going on all those years ago - It doesn't matter if you are looking for a birth, death or marriage for family history, an event for local history or what what was on TV, at the cinema or the price of a washing machine for social history  - pick up a newspaper and you'll find so much.

Hi Readers,
My father born in Woodville knew Graham Nutt & Clyde Dissington and was amazed that when on a trip back to England with my mother, Graham proceded to tell my Dad about the impending move to the Sharpe's Pottery. Graham showed my Father all that had to  be moved and it was quite an amazing story that all of the papers if not moved would be lost.
Lucky we have people like Graham & Clyde that take much time and honour in there work to preseve such stuff so that we the people tracing our ancestors have a central place to visit and find interstesting facts out our family in years gone by.
When I returned from England back in February 2004 started to gather my family tree and Clyde was very helpful in starting me off.

So even as far as Australia can benefit from these two gentleman. I take my hat off to them.
PS my family still live in Gresley, Newhall, Nottingham and Blackfordby.

Congratulations to all involved.  It's nice to see it up and running and with the new look.  I look forward to visiting, hopefully when I am in England in late September and early October.
