Ian

Found him on 1851 in New Shoreham, Sussex

HO107/1647 folio 279 page 71

Francis Holis Woods age 13 born Northampton

It says in relationship he's a Teacher, but all the same aged people are ditto'd from someone at the top, aged 27. In occupation it states these are all Students & then Undergraduates at Lincoln ?? College
The address I think says Quandrangle, the previous entry said Church Street.

The hand writing is abysmal.

regards John

Thank you
He is a long way from Home !
I was hoping he would be with mum and dad. but you never know what you get, when you look into the census. :P
so now i need to go back to the 1841 census
I have a feeling that he connects to Francis Benjamin Woods and Maria Woods Nee Hollis ! who married in Wilby in 1836,

Thank you John
I think the name in one way proved the link and then you have come up with his father in the same business, proves that it must be the same family.
And i looked at Ancestry and found them living in Shoreham as you said, and they continued there up to the 1881 census.
Thank you again that was terrific.

Francis Hollis WOODS was the eldest child of Francis Benjamin WOODS and Maria WOODS (nee HOLLIS).  Francis Hollis WOODS, his wife Anne Catherine WOODS (nee TAYLOR) and his brother George Edmund WOODS (my great grand father) emmigrated to NEW ZEALAND, arriving on the "Pegasus" 19th September 1866 at Auckland, NZ.  Francis Hollis WOODS, and family later emigrated, and settled at Uralla, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA.  The two brothers had attended St Nicholas College, Lancing, as young boys, which would explain your earlier post, about Francis Hollis WOODS.  Francis Hollis WOODS was a Doctor/Surgeon, the same as his father.  George Edmund WOODS ended up a teacher, and remained in NEW ZEALAND, and ended up producing a large family of descendents, including myself!  Another brother Benjamin Percy WOODS is thought to have arrived in Melbourne, AUSTRALIA in 1881, but little is known about him.  He was a Civil Engineer.  As a wild generalisation, I am of the understanding that the other boys in the family remained in ENGLAND, and were lawyers, and that the girls were  spinisters.  I have more information/details if you need it.  What is your interest or connection?

I am unfamiliar with the geography of ENGLAND.  Is St Nicholas College, Lancing, Sussex at or near, near New Shoreham?  Francis Hollis WOODS attended St Nicholas College, Lancing from Jan 1849 to Jun 1853.  George Edmund WOODS was about 11 years younger, and attended from May 1859 to Dec 1862.  Their parents Francis Benjamin WOODS and Maria WOODS (nee HOLLIS) are buried at St Botolph's, Heene Cemetery, Worthing, Sussex, ENGLAND; along with a few other relatives.  Francis Benjamin Woods died 12 May 1887, and Maria WOODS (nee HOLLIS) died 19 Nov 1886.

Would you have any information about the previous generation of WOODS's?  I believe Francis Benjamin WOODS's father was one Benjamin WOODS, and his mother Lucy WOODS (nee WHITE).

Pete

Hi Pete.

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

St Nicholas College Lancing, is near Worthing, or New Shoreham,
depending in which direct you are going.

Our son used to live in Lancing for a while and you used to be able
to see the college from his flat.

I stood so grand on a hill away from the town.

Hopefully Ian will see this post soon.  :)

There are quite a few topics I think on the Hollis(s) family
on the Northants boards.

Hello Sandy
And also hello Pete and thank you so much for that great lot of information
sadly i cannot go further back on the woods side of the family as my interest is in the Hollis family (Maria Woods Nee Hollis) as i was following the children of Lovell Hollis the father of Maria and Martha Hollis nee Tite the mother of Maria. whom i am directly descended from. and trying to find the children of the said familys to try and complete a little more of the tree. and you have been a big help in filling a few gaps there for me.
I can only go back a little further on the Hollis side but you will be able to find most of it on here under Northamptonshire board.
Regards Ian

P.S. Sandy
Still stuck at that same old place on the Markie family with James being married in 1760 but i now know he died 1797 Nether heyford. :-) it must be nearly 25 years stuck on one person :-)
