« on: Friday 17 February 06 22:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,

Looking for info for Margaret Birrell, B. Graitney abt 1787 Married to William Farish. Her parents from her death cert are listed as James Birrell and Margaret Miller. I have good info for her and her children on the 1841/51 census and death age 85 (pauper) in annan 1872 but cannot find birth, marriage or any parental info from the usual sources.

Any help much appreciated.

Kev ???

Hi Kev,

I can't remember if we've spoke/typed about your Farish before?  I think we have but I've been struck vague  ;)

Have you seen the baptisms in Annan on my website?

http://fallon.rootschat.net/opr.html

There are a couple for you.

Mary lawful daughter of William Farish weaver and Margaret Birrel born 14th April bap 11th June 1826.

James lawful son of William Farish weaver Annan and Margaret Birrell born 10th Aug bap 12th Sep 1831

I also have all the Farish's on the early Annan census (1801, 11, & 21) if you would like a copy (there are a few William's) then please PM me your email - it's in excel.

As for Graitney/Gretna - which is after all what you are asking about ;D  When ever I've viewed the film it's patchy.  I've a few people mising in that parish.

P ;D

Hi Pam

You already gave me the early census which together with your website have be very useful with my Farish's.

However the Birrels appear to be more problematic and I think I'll have to have a look at the Graitney film to see if I can find any more info.

Cheers

Kev

Hi Kev,
Although I can't be certain, I believe your ancestor Jean Gass who was the mother of Robert Farish had a sister Rosy whom I believe is Rosina Gass born 3 September 1753 at Hoddom to John Gass. The only John Gass I have who is connected to a Rosina is John Gass born bef 14 Nov 1733 to John Gass and Rosina Irving. John Gass was a  cousin to my ancestor William Gass of Butterdales in Dornock. The common ancestor was Nicholas Gass in Butterdales born c 1620. A lot of this is ofcourse conjecture but there is a fair probability that it is correct. I am descended from Nicholas Gass through his grandson or possibly gt grandson Nichol Gass and his wife Jean Wightman. The gravestones for this family are in Dornock Churchyard, Dumfriesshire.
All the best Robbie
