If this is him you can purchase some information electronically from the register of seaman's records from The National Archives (his fuller service records will be held at TNA).

Name  Quick, James
Official Number:  346718
Place of Birth:  Plymouth, Devon
08 January 1886 ADM 188/526

Information on the register
'You will find the service records for any rating who joined the Royal Navy as a regular serviceman between 1873 and 1923 in the Registers of Seamen's Services (held in the series ADM 188). Service details are recorded up to 1928. You can use this collection to find out details about your ancestor's birth, a description of their physical appearance, their occupation and which ship or ships they served on'.
