I am having difficulty in getting started on any research for some Irish descendants. I have no idea where about in Ireland they came from and all of the sites I have been on seen to be divided into the different counties.
I have in my tree a Daniel Murphy who was born about 1832. I don't know where he was born but it could be somewhere in Ireland or it could be in the Glasgow or Dundee areas in Scotland.
He married a Irish born girl called Margaret Fyffe. They married in Dundee in 1851.
My information is that he was in the armed forces and served in Ireland and in India. He had at least one son born in India and I think he may have been there for some time. This makes me think that he served in Ireland before he moved to India
From the dates I have, my guess is that he served in Ireland at a very young age, and met his wife there, moving to Dundee and getting married when Margaret was only 18 years old and he was about 19.
Margaret's parents were John Fyffe and Catherine Campbell, and again it is a guess, but I would guess that they were from Ireland, but location not known.
The location of Daniels birth is confusing, and I am not sure if he was Scotish or Irish. He, and the next two generations of his family, steadily changed their name from Murphy to McMurchie. I know that this would fit in with the Irish Gaelic version of Murphy but I haven't heard of Murphy in the Scottish Highlands as a local name so it is unlikely that it is based on Scottish Gaelic.
His parents were Neil Murphy and Marjory Hawthorn. They were married in 1830, probably in Scotland. Marjory was born ABT 1808 and died in a poor house in Dundee in 1881. Her birth place is given as Neilston in Glasgow, which is one of he reasons I think they probably were married in Scotland. I have no other information about Neil.
Marjory's parents were James Hawthorn and Marjory
??. It is not possible to read the certificate because of the poor standard of writing but as a guess it could be Andrews or Anderson from the shapes of some of the letters.
It's not a lot to go on but if anyone is looking in the same area as this and they have any other information I would be glad to hear from them.
