The Reids of Dalkeith and Inveresk
« on: Thursday 16 February 06 20:47 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any photographs of the Reid family

Does anyone out there know anything about John Reid born 22/8/1815
in Edinburgh. He married Cecillia Keddie 9/10/1841 but died before his son
James Scott Reid was born 5/10/1815.
When and where did he die.
Cecillia Keddie re married .Do you know anything of her second husband and his family. Did she have any more children and who were her parents.

Any help gratefully received.

Hi

I had a quick look on IGI for Cecilia REID marrying sometime in the 1860s.
I could only find 3
1. CECILIA REID -
Female Marriage: 03 SEP 1861 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. CECILIA REID -
Female Marriage: 03 MAR 1862 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
3. CECILIA REID -
Female Marriage: 21 NOV 1862 Abercorn, West Lothian, Scotland

Taking Abercorn as a likely candidate as it is relatively near Dalkeith - her marriage was to Robert Orrack 21 Nov 1862   Batch No M116611

I looked for Births in Abercorn after that time frame but found none and there are too many Horroks/Orrocks/Orracks to go through. After 1000 and I was still only as far as the Alices I gave up.
The only Cecilia Keddie I found was her first marriage!

Have you tried to find Cecilia on scotlandspeople.gov.uk ? It looks as though she died after the introduction of Statutory Records in 1855.
Since it is a pay site you might have to use some credits to eliminate some names from your enquiries buit her death certificate entry would give you the name of her second husband and probably John Reid's as well. If known, her parents would be listed too although I approach the 'parent names' entries with some scepticism as many of my 'finds' have got it wrong, particularly if they were dead a long time before her second marriage.

The 1861 census might help to locate children by her first husband if they were still at home.

good luck

If you also wish to know where he/she  is buried,  have you thought of looking at the resources board and looking for the church and graveyard.  I think it is called MI site.  If it does not show on there, then post and someone will give you the information as to how to find it.  On looking for things myself, I have occasionally noticed that if it is a womans name it states wife of...... as well as her maiden name and sometimes the children state child of mother or fathers name.

John Reid married Cecilia Keddie 9th October 1848 St Cuthbert's Midlothian. (from SP)

Son James Scott Reid born 1851 I presume (typo?)

There is a Cecilia Keddie in the 1841 census (FreeCen) aged about 20, living at Fettis Row Edinburgh. Born outside county.

There is an extracted marriage on IGI for Cecilia Keddie to John Bell in Dalkeith 1854.

Children:
Cecilia Bell 1854
David Bell 1857

Cecilia Bell, other name Keddie, born 1820, died 1896 Lanarkshire.

This may be totally unrelated and somewhat speculative but it's a thought I had when the names Keddie and Scott Reid came up together.....

There is a Mary Ann KEDDIE (b. 1872 in Portmoak, Kinross-shire to Alexander KEDDIE and Euphamia ms. Silster).  Mary Ann married James Devon Stevenson (born Calton Glasgow, raised Edinburgh Canongate).  James's grandmother was a a Jane (or Jean) SCOTT-REID  (shown as hyphenated in one record, 2 separate names in others) who was born in Govan, Glasgow in 1806 and her father was John Reid (SP), but I don't have any further info on him.

Is it possible your Cecillia Keddie came from Portmoak and you haven't been looking at that area? However I cannot find any records of Alexander Keddie  at all, nor would I know how to look for any siblings :(

Like I said, seeing the 2 names linked, it was just a thought.....

sorry I don't have anything constructive for you, towerhill
