Hi Mac

It would be interesting to see this family on the 1841.  Quite a big age gap between Caroline and Matilda and then between Matilda and Nimrod.  I wonder is this a second marriage for William?

This is the 1861 for them - with Elizabeth's mother living with them.  Elizabeth is a widow and still in Gr Rollright

Hi Carole

This is really getting jam on it.

I shall have to purchase the relevant OFHS church records CD to follow that one up.

Thanks ever so much for the extra info.

Hi Carole

Just so I am doing something myself, I had looked the Farbrothers I could up in the 1881 census.  Nimrod , John, Caroline and Elizabeth were easy, but Elzabeth has become a cordwainers widow. I thought that was more likely to be in the fabric trades than shoemaking.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi

A Cordwainer was an old expression for a shoe maker.  It was previously Cordiner and described a person who worked with Cordovan - a special soft leather from Spain

Hi Mac ...

It would seem that William only married the once!  From the OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837):

20 AUG 1821 - William FARBROTHER (Gt. Rollright) to Elizabeth DAVIS at Thame.

Daughter Caroline would have been born in c1823, which all fits in quite nicely!  (Although it seems a large gap between Caroline and Matilda, the likelihood is that the siblings inbetween had already left home by the time of the 1851 census.  For some reason, Caroline stayed in the family home.)
