UK Surnames website
« on: Monday 27 September 04 15:11 BST (UK) »
I used the UK Surname website
http://www.county-surnames.co.uk
a bit to look to see if anyone else was doing the same surnames as me and I got an email today stating you can still search BUT to view the surnames there is now a fee :(
I tell you what people just grab any chance they can to make a buck!

Don't know if this belongs here, or on "The Lighter Side" ...., but here it is !

Ever wondered how many people in GB with your surname, or with the surname you are currently researching ??

Found this on another web-site:

http://www.taliesin-arlein.net/names/search.php

"ONS Names - Search the List

THIS DATABASE is an extract of an Office of National Statistics database, and contains a list of surnames in use in England, Wales and the Isle of Man in September 2002. The list contains almost 270,000 surnames, shared by 54.4 million people. The entire database contains over a million surnames, shared by 55.9 million people, but names shared by fewer that five people have been excluded from this list."

There's me !!

Surname Count Ranking
 COLEMAN  32169  200

One of them is my dad, and 4 are my brother and his family, that only leaves 32164 to ask ...

Great site!  This is another interesting one based on the location of surnames on the 1881 census, it is a work in progress, so many names are not yet loaded.

Dear Sir
I visited the Taliesin site and searched for Nethway - one of my name interests. There were none. Do you think that accounts for the fact that nobody ever cotacts me about the surname Nethway?

Yrs truly
Puzzled of Wigan
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.
