Navy/Bermuda marriage
« on: Friday 10 February 06 05:59 GMT (UK) »
Good evening
I am not sure where to go for this information but I do hope someone has some ideas.
Captain (later Rear Admiral) Frederick Hutton married Louisa Mary ? (I think maybe Copeland) probably between 1851 and 1862 In Bermuda.  He was the Captain of the "Terror".   Has anyone any idea where I should look for the marriage details?
Thank you
Kind regards
Jill

The GRO hold overseas records for British citizens, it might be found there.  Indexes are on 1837online but you can ask them to search without a reference (would help to narrow down the date range, though, else it gets progressively more expensive)

Hi Jorose

Thank you for that but it seems to exclude both the Navy and Bermuda.  It does however include Hovercrafts!  I think quite a few of these marriages were performed on board the ship by a Captain.  I looked at the 1861 census return for the Terror and although he is recorded as the Captain he was not on board that night.  I was hoping to narrow down the time of his marriage.  I think he is being deliberately difficult.

Kind regards
Jill

"19th Century Church Registers of Bermuda" by A.C. Hollis Hallet does list the marriage. It appears at the top of page 761 and gives the following information. Frederick Hutton of Sandys Parish (which is where the Dockyard was) married Louisa Mary Copeman of Paget Jan 28 1858. It does not say anything else unfortunatly. However since it is in Paget it was probably at St. John's and they may be able to direct you to the actualy marriage cert. Those names do not appear anywhere else in the book so I am leaning towards neither family being from Bermuda originally. I'm not sure how much help this was as it just verified fact you already have.

There's a full report of this Hutton/Copeland marriage in the Royal Gazette for 2 Feb 1858 (column 1)
