Kermode, Daniel b. 1837-1840 IOM, Miner AUST NZ

I don't seem to be getting anywhere with Daniel Kermode.  In summary, this is what I have.

b. 1837-1840 IOM

Daniel may have emigrated to Australia on the Blue Jacket 1860. Then moved on to NZ in 1863.

He was a gold mine manger and shareholder in 1866 and a John Kermode was also shown as a shareholder.  Even given the scarcity of Kermodes in NZ at the time I cannot find a relationship between the two.

He married Catherine McQuade in 1876, they had three children and he died in Auckland NZ 16 Sept 1916.

The marriage and death certificates do not record details of mother and father.  The death certificate shows IOM as birth place, age as 76 years and time in NZ as 50 years.

But this may be the Daniel Kermode who turns up in Lancashire in 1861 so playing with the name a bit another possible in 1851 (again this is the only Daniel +/- 10 yrs)

Sarah, how comprehensive was the 1851 census?  I have had a look at the 1841 census, which may have been of lower quality,  and I can't seem to get a correlation with that Daniel.

I don't see how any indexer could have made much from the way the surname is written by the census enumerator. It does mean there are other possible Daniel Kermodes within a five year range of circa 1837 if you just search on Daniel and scroll to the ks which is how I found this Daniel indexed as Kennish. The 1851 census would eliminate some at least of the possibilities when you can see their surnames spelt again, hopefully much clearer.

try Daniel s/o  Thomas Kermode + cath Kermode bapt Lon Lon 1840-10-25 - in 1841 census along with brothers John & William ;
father Thomas buried  Lonan  2 Apr 1847 - widow cath found as wife of Charles Fargher in Lonan in 1851 along with stepsons William + Daniel - there is no burial for a John of correct age in Lonan but he could be working elsewhere.
A second marriage is a well known driver to leave home early; Interesting as I can't find a marriage between Charles Fargher & Cath

Excellent. 

This is the first match for a Daniel Kermode birth year I have heard of, assuming baptism was close to DOB in IOM. 

The second closest is that shown for Daniel at the Fargher household in 1851.

A couple of questions:

1.  The death certificate for Daniel shows father's occupation as 'Carpenter'.  Does that appear in any of the Thomas records (there is no fathers first name).

2.  Any more information on the baptism record?

3.  You show the baptism as Lon Lon is that Lonan Lonan?

Lon = Lonan
I only have the 1841 census index (I generally use the Manx Museum microfilm but am off Island at present) and havn't transcribed Lonan - post a query on http://www.isle-of-man.com/cgi-bin/interests/genealogy/bulletin/index.pl?noframes as someone thare will have immediate access to Lonan 1841 which should show father's 1841 occp - the step father was a boat builder if that helps .

Generally away from Douglas bapt was within a couple of days of birth but as 19th C developed the gap could widen

There might be additional info in the Lonan Parish register - an excellent official transcription is filmed and is on LDS microfilm (see www.manxnotebook.com/ under genealogy look for LDS film numbers  - given this 'silk purse' of a transcription it took real skill by LDS to turn it into the sow's ear of the Manx IGI though some parish registers (& I think Lonan was one) were not models of record keeping - official registration didn't start until 1877/8.
