John &Sarah Holdsworth's children middlesex London. Lookup please.

Hi I am searching for John Holdsworth And Sarah (youngs) Holdsworth's children. There should be eight boys and one girl. this is what i have. 1881 census.

John Holdsworth head B Norwich Norfolk 1845.
Sarah Holdsworth wife B Rockland Norfolk 1846.
John T Holdsworth son b Westminster London. 1870.
Alice M Holdsworth b London Middlesex 1877.
Frederick W Holdsworth b London middlesex. 1878
Herbert Sydney Holdsworth b London Middlesex 1881.

These are all I have found between the 1881/91 & 1901 census's John the son i found under London .C. the rest I found under St Geo H Sq. Our decent comes from the only daughter Alice and she married Snowdon Topham and had two sons then emigrated to Australia, she then had a daughter Maise Ada topham who is my husbands mother.
Maise says that her mother told her that all her brothers were still living when she left England and arrived in Oz in Dec 1913. The hard part is been in finding the rest of them. I have John & Sarah's marriage, also John's parents and siblings as well as Sarah's parents and siblings its their children that are proving hard to find. I'm told that they think that there was a Stanley and a Cyril but have not found them yet. If anyone can help it would be much apreicated. Cheers from Oz Linda.

Very strange followed them through the the census and no more children

Hi Kris. yes it is very strange and a family mystery, and i don't know where to look next for them, as by the census although they moved around they stayed in Middlesex yet the later children were still registered in st geo h sq. but i am wondering if the others are under a different district, but that dosen't solve the mystery of why they never showed up on the census's, surely they all wern't at other homes every census night?. Do you have any ideas?

Hi Linda. This is indeed peculiar. I would have to say that after tracking this family 4 40 years these children should have shown up. It stikes me that they just dont exist no matter what may b believed by Alices Dau. But y would Alice lie about having 8 brothers  I find it hard to Believe that a total of 5 boys have missed every census. One mayb but 5    When they wernt in 91 I assumed they were older so went to 71 and nothing...Other than that I just don't know. I thought about this one all night and even wondered if they may have been adopted out but then surely Alice wouldnt have known that they were living when she came to Oz.

Hi Kris, the only other thing I can think of to tell you is that my motherinlaw said the her mother used to talk about her brothers working in the mines I have know idea where these mines would be as I'm an Ozzie and never been to England, She also said that Stanley Holdsworth her brother lived on or near the thames river.
As my mother inlaw is 90 next year and frail she does not recall things a well as she used to. I hope that this may be a clue to where they were. Cheers Linda.

I had a look at various census returns for this family and agree that it looks very strange!

One of the possibilities I know you have considered is that some of the children were fostered out, but I wonder if the "reverse" might be the case?  There are a family of YOUNGS in Norfolk in 1901 with children including a Cyril.  Two of the daughters were born in Australia - maybe Alice's inspiration to go there?

What if (very big IF) the missing brothers are adopted from another relative's family, possibly YOUNGS?

Other thoughts:

HOLDSWORTH seems to be a Yorkshire name and there is certainly mining in Yorkshire.

I'd have thought your family were too old to have further children after 1901??!!

All the boys have 2 first names - maybe she counted each of them twice (sorry, rather flippant!)

My thought would be that if the brothers were miners, and near the Thames then the obvious place for them to be would be Kent. I can't think of any mines upriver, but there's a fair few to choose from lower down.
