Thanks guys! This is getting more confusing, though! Are the kids' surnames' Hancock on the 1871? I know that Hannah married a Charles White in q/e Dec 1876, and all the kids are listed on the 1881 census with the surname Lee! Hannah also married Charles White under her maiden name of Lee.  I have just found a death q/e March 1875 for a William Hancock aged 42, so I guess that would perhaps explain why she married again, but I thought she'd have to re-marry with the name Hancock?

Yes the kids names are down as Hancock (maybe it was just for respectability, maybe she didnt even marry William)..... One of the childrens birth certificates may shed some light.....

That's exactly what I was thinking last night, perhaps they weren't even married! Great minds, Catherine! Just have to save pennies and find 1 birth cert. then Thanks to all, Steph xx  oh!! have just found birth for John Hancock Lee, June 1873 Northampton, think I'll give that 1 a go!!

Looking like William could be the father then (at least of John anyway, maybe not the earlier ones?), hence his surname as Johns middle name, but then he goes and dies before they can marry and make it official!
