I have been interested in "Oyster Lane" Wexford.  I was told that it is one of the few original lanes still in existance, is this correct?.    My father-in-law lived there in 1912-1928

A lot of our old lanes still exist but are in a terrible state. Oyster Lane is a very interesting one. It had long tradition. Sadly it is now taken up with car parks on either side with major developments planned.

Thanks Nick for your speedy response, I have to ask another queation.  Do you know of any publication that has the history of Oyster Lane ?   Again hearsay but I was told that the Dowdall family actually collected oysters, that Oyster Lane had many pubs selling guiness and oysters.  any truth in that?.  Once again, many thanks and have a great day.....  Joyce Dowdall (Canada)

From my article on The Lanes of Wexford
"Oyster Lane is said to take its name from the oyster taverns that were located there. These are said to have been particularly popular with theatregoers after the shows when oysters, brown bread and porter were consumed. The lane was opened in 1828 and there is a record of Mr Furlong seeking payment for part of a house knocked down to facilitate the process.  In  the early 1800s it had 2 sail lofts; 1 malt house; 12 oyster taverns; Carr’s Hotel was reported to have a pipe band from Johnstown. There was a Clay Pipe factory in top section. It later became Slaney Knitwear. There was a proposed name change to Carr Street, probably commemorating Carr’s Tavern."
