Tiffany or Tiverton Docks - around Battersea?
« on: Wednesday 08 February 06 18:00 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information on either the Tiffany (which may not have been read correctly) or the Tiverton docks. It seems that ancestors - Burridges - may have owned them in the 1800's but were given (?) or put in Chancery for non-payment of taxes. What is chancery? Not a Canadian term as far as I know.
Because ancestors come from Battersea, I figure that these docks might be around there.  I have found Tiverton Devon on the web, but still can't figure where this town/place is... Help, please.

Do you mean the Tilbury Docks?  they come up if you do a google for Battersea docks  - see this ref.

Like you, the only Tiverton seems to be in Devon -

Justice, and now exercises jurisdiction only in equity
Hope this is some help

Hello, Sensii,

If the Burridges were indeed "Wharfingers".  ( owners or managers of dock or wharves) they may well be found in records at the Guildhall Library.  I have looked at Wharfinger records there for my own ancestors.

I have been looking at old ordnance survey maps to try to find any wharf with a  name like Tiffany or Tiverton in the Battersea Reach area of the river Thames but could find none.

Tilbury docks are a long way from Battersea as they are way out in the estuary of the Thames on the north bank of the river.

Hi,

We've now emailed both the Tiverton Museum and Tilbury to see if they have any records of a Burridge being owner or manager.
Many thanks to both who have given us clues for us to follow. If you find anything else, we would appreciate hearing from you.
