Missing Ancestor COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 08 February 06 13:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I've got a specific problem that I'd appreciate some help with.
I have ancestor Mary Ann Sale born 1818 Rivington (from marriage certificate and census returns '61 and '71). Father down as James on the marriage certificate.

Can't find her baptism on the IGI or on the Rivington Parish Registers transcribed on the Angelfire site.

What I have done is look at the Sale family as a whole in the Rivington/Horwich area. I've found a James Sale b.1774 Horwich who married a Mary Anderton in Bolton Le Moors and his brother John who married Margaret Anderton in Bolton Le Moors two years earlier. (Girls could be cousins).

If you look at the births of their children you see a definite gap from between about 1810 to 1820. In other words they had a set of children born Rivington/Horwich early after marriage and a set of later children born Rivington/Horwich. The gap of about ten years covers Mary Ann's birthdate but also that of several other Sale's who gave their date of birth between these periods and place of birth as Rivington and whose baptisms also can't be found.

I'm wondering if anyone has come across a similar problem in the Rivington/Horwich area and if so how they resolved it. Other than that I'm hoping for some advice on why there is this gap and where to look next.

Many thanks.

Its quite possible that Mary Ann was actually not born in Rivington. There are 3 scenarios that I can think of.

1 - she says she was born there because that is what she was told

2 - she assumes she was born there because most of her siblings were born there

3 - her employer (if she was working) filled out the papers and assumed she was born there.

You might need to start looking at other parishes. First check which parish the mother came from and check the OPRS for that parish first.

I have the same thing with one of my families. The siblings were all born in Somerset but grew up in Devon. On the census records some of them say they were born in Somerset and are consistent (and quite correct) about it.

At least two members of the family kept changing their minds so sometimes the census record says that they were born in Devon and sometimes they were born in Somerset.

At least I know the OPRs in Somerset proves that they were born in Somerset.  ;D

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I've looked at surrounding parishes and the marriage place of her mother. The birth place of her mother most probably used the Parish Church of Rivington for baptisms.

Not sure what you mean by the OPRS, do you mean the On-Line Parish Clerk or is it something else?

Thanks for taking an interest.

See you, Lee.

OPR = Original Parish records

OPC = Online Parish Clerks

For parish records before 1837 you will need to either go to the county record office, or the nearest Mormon church family history center and see what parish registers are available.

If the mother was born in Rivington, where was the father born? Was he local as well?

Also do you have copies of the birth/baptism records for those siblings who were born in Rivington? The notes in the registry just might have a clue. :)

And dont just check the surrounding parishes - you need to check the nearest large city - or the entire county - or maybe even another county.

If there is an OPC for your parish - you could ask them if they have any records. They might be able to help.

Good luck

Hi, I've been reading your posts about the Sale family of Rivington/Horwich.

I do have some baptisms up to 1810, the family used Lee Chapel and prior to that it would probably have been Rivington Chapel (Nonconformist - which is separate to Rivington Church).  There were at least 3 generations called Lambert Sale.

If you send me a pm I will give you the link to view them.

Hi Tipps

There's a transcript of the Rivington CE Church records on Angelfire which is where I got most of the details of the Sale's from. For The Non-Con I got hold of the booklet transcibing the records by Joan Holding/Colin Rogers. Is your info different to those?

Thanks for your interest.

Regards, Lee.

Hi Lee,

I have the Lee Chapel baptism records (which Angelfire says do not exist!) from 1765.

Lambert and Ellin used Lee Chapel and also John and Peggy if that's any help.
