Birth Look Up in Manchester
« on: Friday 24 September 04 18:39 BST (UK) »
I have a family that I can trace in the US but having the worst time in the UK.  Could someone please look up the birth of a George William Burke on January 5, 1878 (+ or - 1 year)?

In the 1881 Census, There is a family living in Salford, Lancashire at 25 East Robert Street that looks to be a close match to my Burkes.  The father is William Burke and the mother is Mary.  The child I am interested in is George William Burke.  Below are the details I know:

George William Burke was born on January 5, 1878 in England to Margaret(possibly Mary) Stone and William Burke.  He had the following Siblings- James (born 1879), Dorothy (born 1880) and Henrietta (born 1884).  He and his siblings were all born in England.  I do not know if they all came over to the US.  I have to belive they did as George would have been so very young to come over alone at age 13 or 14.  George came to the US in 1891.

I cannot find him for sure in the 1891 UK census and the US census for 1900 is not indexed so I have been having problems trying to find him with his parents as I am not sure if they even came to the US.  I wonder if he missed the UK census as he was on his way to the US at that time.  I only know the year, not the exact date of the ship.

If anyone has access to Manchester birth records, it would be a great help to find more on this family.- Sincerely, Kristin ;D

Hi Kristin,

Living in the USA I am guessing that you can not access the Sc. Catherines Index. This is our big list of all Births Deaths and Marriages for the Country.

There is a site where you can view the Index for a fee but is especially usefull if you know the name and rough date.

www.1837online.com

Otherwise keep an eye on the free BMD Sites, there are quite a few now being updated on a regular basis but ongoing.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk is one to start with but there are many more which you can find under the counties boards.

Thanks for the advice.  I have freebmd on my favorites list and check it reguarly.  I jsut cannot find for sure the correct place he was born.  While there are few Burke's outside of Lancashire, I really need to find someone who can see the paretn's names for me.

I have ordered 3 records only to find out that the parents are wrong.  Pro ony charges $8 dollars but it adds up when you still have no results. >:(

Thanks for the clues. ;D- Kristin

Hi Kristen,

If we find a match, we too cannot see the parents ! All it says is.....

John Smith 6d 896 Salford (this is an example)

We in this case would have to send off to "salford" for this certificate. (right or wrong)

To find out the parents we have to check the baptism records which would need to be looked up by the Church, but which Church ??? Do we search first ????

ha ha it is not much clearer living close by!

Hello Kristin,

If you look on Lancashire BMD under Salford you will find the birth record of Dorothy Burke at least, I haven't checked the others, they are in the Greengate district which is where East Robert Street is.
I have the 1891 surname index for Salford but have not found your family on it.

Cheers,  Norma

Norma,

Thank you.  I think I will order one of the certificates.  It seems his sisters were registered.

They came to the US in 1891 so I think they missed the census.

Yours- Kristin
